Thats what I did to mine and everything worked again.

Weird. Formatting is necessary if there's emunand there as well to prevent some conflicts with the 2 nands.
But yea it doesn't hurt to format your system once though especially if you getting bugs

Just be sure to use one that is compatible with your 3ds type(New / old ; EU/ US) , and no it wont brick your sysnand , it's not console unique , plus if anything bad happens as long as you have a sysnand backup you can always go back.
