freeShop puts the 3ds's wifi card into his limits, it is faster than "download from PC + install" anyways.
Actually last night I began testing that theory. So far testing has shown that it takes less time to download on pc, transfer to SD and then install via FBI. At least on o3ds, and if you can find the files uploaded to a good host like gdrive or mega.

nope, tbh the limitations of the install speed of cia files means that even if you downloaded a cia elswhere once you to to install it you end up waiting just as long, unless you happen to be using sky3ds or gateway and can use .3ds files.....but even then finding decent download sites with any game you want would probably be hard
I'll be creating a thread eventually for this, but I've actually seen pc download then install to always go faster than freeShop in an experiment I started last night.

I find this to be true too. I can only get 700lbs on freeshop and ciangel. If I use mega for a cia file I get 13MBS down then it takes about 15 mins for a 1.5gb+ file to install so it's quicker for me to do it that way.

My testing is also starting to show that the larger the game is, the bigger time gap there is between freeShop and CIA download. The one thing freeShop does have over CIA is the ability to queue a list of games and just let them install in the background without having to fuss with finding the games on That ISO Site and transferring them all to SD.

When I use FreeShop I get about 1300kb/s on average. It fluctuates between about 700kbs and 1600kkbs but takes maybe about 15-20 mins to install a 3GB game like Resident Evil Revelations. That would take SO much longer downloading the .cia, moving it to the SD card, then installing it through FBI. I'd end up waiting more like 30 mins or longer....

o3ds or n3ds?
For me I can easily achieve 6+MB/s, but on o3ds I'm maxing at 700kbps.

Freeshop downloads 1.8 mbs for me, sooo get a better internet provider?
If I can download at 6+MB/s over wifi from my laptop for the CIA, then my internet speeds are not the issue, but rather the wireless hardware/processing speed of the o3ds i've tested with.

Or a better SD card.
I can write a 1GB game to my SD card in about 30-45 seconds, so that won't be the bottleneck either.

I can't tell if everyone here is just being ignorant because they haven't actually put both to the test, or if the n3ds somehow has MUCH better download speeds than o3ds.
One of my tests had a game that was about 800MB. Took about a minute and a half to download on PC, another minute to transfer to SD, so by 2:30 I was able to be in FBI starting the install, which is much faster installing from SD than installing while downloading with freeShop.
Maybe it's different with n3ds, but o3ds download speeds are horribly bottlenecked by the hardware itself.

I've used both an o3ds and a n3ds on the same network.
The o3ds capped at around 700kb/s, while the n3ds went as high as 1300kb/s, but usually hovered about ~1000-ish

So maybe the results would vary between o3ds and n3ds, but unfortunately I don't have a n3ds to test with yet. So for now my results are, at least for o3ds it is faster to download the CIA from PC as long as you can find one uploaded to a good host like gdrive or mega.

My "unofficial" results because I haven't completed testing yet

Yah but I don't think the same would be true for n3ds because of the increased download speed.
Either way I prefer freeshop because i can search for a huge queue and leave my 3ds to download it all while I do something else.

Why is no one suggesting get a better gateway / modem?
By "gateway" I believe you mean "router". I'm a networking major, and I know for a fact my main router is not the bottleneck (I just said above that I can get 6+MB/s download speeds on my laptop over wifi).
It's basically been proven at this point that the o3ds botlenecks down speed to 700kbps, which even older wireless access points (or wireless routers) could easily beat.

Well, the issue here is just the o3ds hardware to write on the SD card, not the WiFi.

I'm getting speeds of 1300KB/s on a n3ds installing from the freeShop and I know the n3ds can achieve better speeds over WiFi (I checked it with the NTR streaming both screens to the PC, I've seen peaks of +2500KB/s), so again n3ds is also capped by the SD hardware.

So my thoughts: it's faster to download directly from the freeShop if you're on a n3ds, and it's faster to use a downloaded cia, transfer it to the SD card and install it using FBI on an o3ds (it's easier the other way tho, and you can also queue)

Anyways, it's not that you are installing games all day so why worrying about saving 5 minutes you can spend at the forum reading interesting stuff? :P

Edit: now that I think again about it... Wouldn't the o3ds cap at 700KB/s mean that can't write faster than that even if the cia is already on the SD card? So that would mean that the faster way to install a game on the o3ds would also be using the freeShop

Well people seem to be getting alot better speeds than me and my internet is fine it runs at 100mbs down and 20 up so it must be the shitty class sd card. I'll swap it out and see if results change.

You probably will get faster than 700 kb/s on freeshop, unless that's your internet speed. I'd have to guess that the SD is the bottleneck there.

You can always try CIAngel, it might be faster than freeshop.

FBI network install is painfully slow, yeah. If you're going to use 3DesStuff you probably want to copy the generated CIA to a SD card first
Not the SD Card, just the 3DS speed itself.

Old 3DS only gets 800kbps max, while n3DS can get up to 1700kbps max.

Yeah I think I am better off downloading on pc then and installing cia via fbi.

For example pokemon ruby is about 1.7gb it takes about 40-50mins via freeshop to downloadand install, if I go to my pc I can have it downloaded in about 8mins and install takes about 15-20 on fbi.
