I am getting washed out colors and way too bright. I have tried the trim pot does not seem to help. I have a 40 pin gba with a type b screen ( white connector). Any help is appreciated! image.jpg

AFAIK this is a known issue with 40 pin + B type screen. Try to get a 32pin GBA or a AB type screen (brown connector).

See this post from this thread for more information.

Have you tried solder this two points? I had same issue, but I solved in this way.

Hi guys, my GBA is an European model with a "02 7-2" motherboard. I believe it needs a 40-pin connector (correct me if I'm mistaken).

I've found this backlit screen in aliexpress:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/For-...M-Backlit-Brighter-Highlight/32622199888.html

@SaurusX's post shows a comparison between two different screens: AB type & B type.
Looking at the photos from the Aliexpress product page, I can see it has a white connector, also the leads are of uniform width... but I'm not really sure if it's a "B type" since it's OEM (not an original AGS-101 screen). Could someone light me up with this?

Many users have reported having washed out colors with this combination (40-pin mother + B type screen). Some have solved it soldering ground to some solder point on the motherboard or the ribbon cable.

My question... buy or don't?

Something like that.
B-type screen (white connector) has tracks of the same width, so it's easy to tell them apart just by looking at the ribbon.
It seems like the other screen is harder to find. Is there a reliable source? I seem to find only the other ones. Is there a connector that converts the two? Or maybe somehow to modify the current?

Well, lee_chan1985 on eBay sells adapters that are made specifically (see description) for B-type screen (white connector, tracks of the same width) and 40-pin GBA.
Mine hasn't arrived yet, so I can't tell you if it really works. But there were reports that it's working fine.

I've been modding few GBAs here and there and always have the same problem, when putting everything together it's such a tight fit that it kinda alter the shape of the front and the screen protector always seem to unstick on the bottom.

has anyone experienced this or found a solution?

Oh! and the brightness seem to differ from one model to an other, and it's basically always nearer to the AGS-101 default brightness than the full power brightness mode. Any tips on this?

Got the adapter today for 40-pin GBA and B-type screen (with white connector and tracks of the same width)
It works perfectly, I didn't even need to adjust potentiometer!
Everything closed up nicely, just had to take off all the adhesive rubber from display and attach it to shell with double-sided tape.
Brightness on high level is just a little bit lower than AGS-101's high level.

Very pleased with result.

It's been about 2 years or so since I have done anything with my backlit GBA, but I did want to clarify something regarding the AB and B screens on the GBA SP units. I don't know where people are getting this idea that the screens with white terminals are official and brown/black ends are "third-party" (as suggested by ebay seller lee_chan1985). If I recall correctly, the "white" (aka B screens with uniform leads) were the older variety whereas the "brown" (aka AB with non-uniform leads) screens are the more modern ones. Both are official SP screens. Anyone doing backlight mods simply need to look at the leads (not the color of the backside of the terminal traces).

I had made a video about this a long time ago:

Yeah, it was strange to me too.
I guess they call AB third-party because these screens were sold from China as OEM replacement.

I am trying to see if someone could help me on here, I was trying to do a backlight mod on a GBA but I've ran into a problem. The screen I pulled from a AGS-101 which is a brown tab type AB is not powering on the screen when I turn on my GBA. I have a 40 pin GBA ive tried to solder the P1 to DA1 without any success. Please let me know if there is other ways around this problem, thanks.
