Yeah, I was willing to bet it was something sons do to their things every now and then.
I was probably one of those kids who really did always appreciate my games, they were fragile things and people taught me a lot about it. Largest things that happened to my stuff was falling over in my bike while having my Gameboy color in my pocket which rubbed the top of start button off from the console and since then I had to operate the start button with a pen of one kind or another...

Oh, and dont forget to format the 3DS before attempting the downgrade, as it CAN softbrick and update to 11.0 if you dont, in which case you will lose access to Gateway AND other hacks. And when the downgrade crashes and shows an error scree, dont worry, its like that on almost every downgrade from 9.6. Just eject the sd in that case, boot the 3DS, reinsert te sd and change the theme, boot browserhax to reinstall menuhax and start the downgrade a second time. Otherwise, just follow the Plailect guide!

I got it to 9.2 even though it crashed like 4 times and I needed to redo the steps before it it all the time. (Thanks iron knight )

Oh and one more question when the 3ds is on this lumaOS can my son play original Ds games too?

Yes, your son can as long as you don't mess with TWLFirm. If you don't know what this is, you should be fine.

Yes, as soon as you finish the guide is pretty much done to use for anything he may want, online games, DS games, emulators and everything.

also, just go with calm on steps 4 and 5 as they are the only ones with some risk involved

Yes. As extra you can also install GBA injects and DSi games with CFW (one example would be the Legend of Zelda Four Swords anniversary edition that was limited and not available to new people at all in any other way but downloading a .CIA of it)

Best of luck, I had "fun" times myself as well as I have done CFW and A9LH installations for dozens of my friends now. I just do it for fun... I have weird things I derive fun from...

Awesome!! Yeah! Find out about A9LH! It helps keep your 3DS safe in a way! Look up FreeShop after you install. Also, I recommend uninstalling any apps (also known as CIA's) if you don't want you son possibly harming his 3DS (definitely uninstall FBI, Decrypt9, and some others). All you need to keep essentially is FreeShop and LumaUpdater (and maybe Homebr3w)

Setup browserhax/menuhax(Guide if you don't know how https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Part-1-(Homebrew), which is pretty easy to do. Afterwards follow this guide to downgrade to 9.2: https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Part-2-(9.2.0-Downgrade)
Afterwards just go into the Gateway menu through Menuhax.

Of course, this is only menuhax, which is a lot less time consuming to setup. If you have some patience, I recommend reading into A9LH, as it is a much better hack that allows you to boot directly into CFW.

A9LH all the way! If OP has already started following the guide, she should continue to the end. Just make sure that you don't take any breaks for bedtime, supper time or whatever when starting part 4 and part 5 of the guide, which are the most critical. Give yourself a couple hours to work through those two parts, and you should be fine.

One thing in installing A9LH is safe-points.

What I meant by that is a place where you can stop safely.
If it needs rebooting and needing the homebrew channel to access an entrypoint to install menuhax/Luma3ds then it means you are SAFE to close the 3ds (for now) and try again tomorrow/next time.

Yeah,
AH ALSO since you probably got a New 3DS as I understand (as in the device "new 3DS") - You can also play official nintendo SNES Virtual Console games... And Dozens of Injects for official SNES VC too. Link To the Past and so on all on 3DS now. Also Check out Newest version of FBI and how it can install from QR codes. If you search for some database - well, yeah, new fun way to install games.
