It tells us what tool the original CPK was made with (CPKFBSTD1.19.16, DLL3.00.02) but I don't think we can find that anywhere on the internet. All we can do is try some other CPK tools for now.

Can you even choose which files to leave uncompressed? I don't see the option anywhere in the program, it just seems to decide by itself

I don't see any option aside from "try to compress all the things".
If you find any other tools (I just followed the ones you described) they can be tried, but I'd definitely put it down to an error with the CPK creation.

Feel free to give CriPakTools a spin:

It's C# and open source, so it should be easy to work with.
Tried this, I at least didn't get the game failing to load.
Voices were unchanged though, so perhaps sound/ wasn't where the voices were.

Edit: Ninja edit: I used the text file replace mode, to get a list of all files in /sound and replace them with the JP copy ones.

Did you use it to pack the files back? What files did you try to change?
I'm trying to unpack it using a (supposedly unknown) cpk tool provided by http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,16217.400.html
Still waiting for it to finish.

I had Visual Studio installed already so I just used it from there.
I tried to replace all files in sound dir of CPK with ones from JP version, to no apparent avail.

Weird. It should work. The files in that folder hav the same naming scheme as the voice files.

Yeah, working on confirming some things, like "did I insert the right one?" (though that should be "yes", since my other two are fully JP non-functional, respectively).
The patched one still has a different size, but seeing as the prior method made nothing load, I wouldn't think it would have English voices from failing.

EDIT: Nope, FTP downloaded, file matched. Odd.
EDIT 2: Okay, extracted the repack, still using US sound files, despite my "patch" dir containing JP. Makes perfect sense.
EDIT 3: Tried a single file, reading it out still gives the US one. This tool is doing something to the archive, but it's not being very useful of it.

So uh...anyone have plans for making a Persona 4 Golden save editor within the next year or two? I don't know much about this kinda stuff, so I'll wait for a stable release.
Yes, my friend is working one one right now as we speak. He's already figured out all the values for yen, HP, SP, level, personas, skills, party members, items etc.

I'll link it here when it's done.

No problem! Here's some screenshots he shared with us:

Have you noticed that the rebuilt CPK has a little blue UC symbol next to the file names when you open it in CriPackedFileMaker? The original CPK only has a little red C.
Maybe it has something to do with that?

That would seem to be Compressed/UnCompressed.
Data in sound is uncompressed already, if you look down far enough (check 12099 and before as far as IDs go), so that should be a non-issue if only replacing sound.

I see...
How did you use CriPakTools? How to build an entire folder into a cpk with it? It seems to work on a file by file basis.

Theoretically, you can use the "BATCH_REPLACE_LIST_TXT" (-b) option to mass replace files.
The problem is, that despite my files to replace with being valid, the files in the CPK never change.
SHA256 of the CPK changes, but that can mean literally anything, so that's still not very helpful.
