Can I just backup the contents of my SD card, do the whole a9lh process, paste the backup and my save data/3DS stuff will still be there?

Edit: Nvm, just saw this link talking about how reformatting will move the sed.

https://github.com/Plailect/PlaiSysUpdater/issues/8#issuecomment-218588857

So I guess I have to use JK Save Manager to backup the files I want first?

A9LH won't mess with your saves. You will have everything you started with, including saves and installed cia's ect ect.

a9lh recommends that I format the 3DS first just in case the 9.2 downgrade bricks though.
When you're on the homebrew step, you can install a save manager like SVDT or JKSM to export your save files, if that's all you care about.
After the a9lh, you can reinstall your apps from the eshop and import the saves back again.

You can use SVDT to save any savedata that you really care about, but if you do everything right you probably won't need it. Do you already have an emunand setup? If so, just use EmuNand9 to "Backup Emunand to File." Afterwards backup the entire contents of your SD card. Once you've installed A9LH, you can copy all the files back onto your 3DS, restore your Emunand, and you'll have everything back. With A9LH properly set up you can restore your Emunand to Sysnand if you want to save space on your SD.

Pialect's guide walks you through all of this though.

Guessing OP doesn't have an EmuNAND. Also, the format recommended is the one to avoid the issue described here. It's also linked and explained in Part 2.

Now back in the 10.7 days, I did about a good 4 systems without ever formatting, and they downgraded fine, however, ever since 11.0 has hit, I don't take that risk at all. I am well aware some users have claimed that they've done many 3DS units and never formatted and haven't run into a soft-brick, but on the flip side of that, are users who didn't take that advice and gambled on it and did soft-brick on the downgrade. Since 11.0 requires a hardmod at the time of this post, no one should really be gambling and taking a chance on it, unless you get high off that for some weird and strange reason.

This is what OP should do, most important save data can be backed up with SVDT and JKSM.

Yeah I did two of my 3DS without ever formatting but now that I'm helping my friends, it's a different matter. I'm so glad I didn't brick then.

Guess that's the solution, I'll be using JKSM to backup. Thanks for confirming my thoughts.
