I've seen many threads on this topic, but none of the solutions have helped me here. It happened just a few days ago. My external hard drive that I was using to play my wii backup files was working splendid up until usb loader gx just up and started not liking it anymore. I've also tried Wiiflow, but it only allows me to read from the SD card.

Here's the log that syscheck gave me. I really have no clue what to do right now. I've updated to recommended cIOS's, and even resorted to reformatting my hard drive. Any help is appreciated.

Indeed I have. In fact, usb loaders can only read the one nearest the edge, and I've always kept it there. It never works on the other one.

After observing my log that I have posted in the original post, I may think it has something to do with the ios I'm running on, Homebrew Channel 1.0.8 running on IOS37 ; and to my knowledge, that's a very old ios. Would anyone recommend updating it? Or would it make no difference? If the former, how should I do this? When using hackmii, it gets stuck at the scam notice screen (Hey, I'm noticing a pattern here of my wii favoring freezing on particular screens forever). Also, I can't connect online, so if there's a manual guide to that, that's appreciated as well. Thanks for the help so far.

Your HBC is old. It's supposed to update itself if it has an internet connection set up or you can use the lasest version HackMii Installer. It also needs IOS58 instead of 37.

USB Loader GX does support both USB ports but you need a cIOS that can support it. (d2x v10beta53-alt does)

The info is all in the USB Loader GX support thread.

Homebrew channel version is fine (even if old, it's compatible with AHB access), but might not use the same command to enable AHB.
It's recommended to update it to prevent issues with other homebrew.
But first, install IOS58 using this homebrew : http://wiibrew.org/wiki/IOS58_Installer (THIS IS FOR THE WII ONLY, NOT WIIU ! I add this warning because dump peoples install random things without checking if it's the right file for the right console)
then, re-run hackmii installer from the Homebrew channel (no need to use a game exploit anymore) to reinstall/update HBC.

Your slot 249 already supports both USB Ports. (but you need to setup USBLoaderGX accordingly)
your slot 250 doesn't.

About the detection issue, once you installed IOS58, you can try to use that IOS slot inside the loader. It's the only official IOS from nintendo to support USB2.0, and homebrew can use it.
so, launch USBLoaderGX > settings > loader settings > Loader's IOS : 58
and reboot.

Might not be related but I had the same issue, I replaced my USB cable and worked like a charm, odd thing is that cable works for everything else just not in my wii.

which version of USBLoaderGX are you using?
Which setting are you trying to change ?

"Boot/standard" is an old setting, from an old version of USBLoaderGX.
I told you to update, and you said "ok thanks".
The last revision is in my signature. Launch it from the homebrew channel.

If you have the full channel (3.0c) installed, you need to replace it with a forwarder channel. Follow this tutorial.

I replaced my USB cable and worked like a charm
That's part of the possible issues, but not everyone think it's useful to test. and not everyone want to buy just a cable for the test.
It could be due to the cable length, or if it's coated or not.
a cable is a cable and it should work, but users like you reported different behavior with different cables.

Thanks for all the help to those suggesting fixes. I'm attempting to repair it right now, so once I follow the instructions that Cyan has posted, I'll update you all if it works or not.

Here's what I've done: Installed IOS58, reinstalled Homebrew, got the latest version of USBLoader GX, changed the Loader IOS to 58, but it still refuses to read my hard drive. "Loading...Initialize usb device" it says. I've also attempted the method where it waits for the HDD, then plugged in my hard drive, but it just freezes. Here's my new syscheck log

Thanks for following what I said and reporting back. Sorry for the delay I didn't notice it.

IOS58 and HBC are now fine. That's strange it still can't load your drive.
What's strange is that you said it used to work, but now it doesn't work anymore.
The drive still work fine on your computer? you can see your game list?

Did you try to set the IOS to 250 in USBLoaderGX settings? the place where you set it to 58, try 250.
note that the cIOS installed in your slot250 doesn't support port1, so be sure to connect the drive to USB Port0 (bottom port on Wii).

Don't post the same issue in multiple threads. You'll end up with multiple suggestions that will just end up being confusing.
