I currently have Rxtools Nightly and I keep getting replys saying I should upgrade my CFW as its "outdated". I'm sure there's a thread explaining the differences in CFW's but would I really gain a huge difference in upgrading my CFW?

I want to know what I can gain out of upgrading

&

How I would upgrade from Rxtools -> (i.e. Cakes)
-edit-
Thanks for your help!

it's outdated because the CFW part of rxTools does not get updates anymore and uses an older FIRM.

come 11.1 if/when Home Menu/ErrDisp/something important requires the FIRM of 11.0, rxTools will no longer boot your emunand.

If you are satisfied with your cfw, and don't use it for anything more, then don't upgrade. Also, what are you using to get into cfw?
Luma (which is probably the best cfw atm) can be run through menuhax or a9lh, so it's easy to switch over cfw if you're on menuhax.
However if you're on mset it's not as simple as just adding luma3ds since it doesn't support it (afaik)

There is basically no reason to keep an outdated CFW on your main console. The main reason for using rxtools was the features built into it (back in the days of old), but that is irrelevant because they have been replaced by other stuff (decrypt9, emunand9, etc.). What @ihaveamac said is also something relevant, no ones working on rxtools anymore, and when an update rolls around, its useless. The current CFW options all have the ability to do what rxtools (boot emunand, patch sigs, etc.) does and more (reboot patches, luma has a dev mode or something, you can probably find more information on that somewhere on lumas git hub page iirc).

the thing about rxTools is it will become "broken", possibly shortly. switching custom firmware early now is quick and easy, and ensures you won't have any problems in the future.

it currently uses the NATIVE_FIRM from 9.6, for both Old3DS and New3DS. for the longest time, all of the custom firmwares could get away with keeping this firmware(for Old3DS at least). that's because the kernel version hasn't changed from 2.50-X.

11.0 made the first change to it since 9.6, it's now 2.51-X. nothing in 11.0 requires it yet, which is why you can still get away with an older NATIVE_FIRM. but when Nintendo releases 11.1.0-34 or whatever, they can make something important (like Home Menu, ErrDisp, a system module...) require the new firmware, which then breaks rxTools and any custom firmware that doesn't support the new firmware yet.

for easy custom firmware, check out Luma3DS. for the "tools" part of rxTools, you'll want Decrypt9.

i have no problem with the "if its not broken don't fix it attitude" . . . shit i am one of the educated few who still has not installed a9lh but luma3ds is a lot better than rxtools . . . with a rxtools nightly build its hard to tell what exactly will work as the builds were tweaked nearly every day . . . for instance rxtools are supposed to have twl_firm patching but in many nightly builds its missing/broken . . .but luma has working twl_firm patches

Just install luma3ds.
You might not see a reason now.
But trust me. Rxtools is dead .
There is no longer an active dev and most of the community migrated to luma3ds.
It's just more reliable, safe and overall the best option to use luma3ds.
Get rid of rxtools and replace it with Luma.
It's easy and might be a hell of a good decision. ;)

If it works, there's no real reason to, but at the same time there's no real reason not to - it's not like things won't continue to work, in fact Luma technically has more features (especially for N3DS users with the clockspeed settings.)

It would take about as long as it took you to come here and type the question - it's literally deleting a file or two and a folder and replacing them with a different one so there's no effort involved.

Still using rxTools 2.6 on latest firmware, and everything works.
I don't believe that the FIRM will be updated anymore, since Nintendo has added pretty much everything to the home menu now.

If it works, just keep it like that. Why stress one more time with the risk of bricking? (yeah, I know right now you have a really small chance of it happening, but it still exists)
Just keep an eye out on the news, and if a new update comes that bricks rxTools, then change to another CFW.

No, if they update any system application rxTools will break immediately, forever. They updated NFIRM in 11.0.

Risk of bricking by changing CFW is literally nonexistent. You move files around on your SD card.

And by changing files, do I get to keep all of my saves and installed games?
