I am hoping to get in touch with someone experienced in modding a New 3DSXL. I am pretty tech savvy but I am a bit overwhelmed with all the requirements to downgrade and then mod my 3DS.

I'm technically literate and do not mind spending some cash to purchase necessary items. I need a guiding hand to answer a few questions, like what cartridge do I need to purchase and what exact files are needed. I have read the Plailect/Guide but with all the various regions and starting points based on current firmware I am a bit cautious.

In any event if someone would like to donate a few minutes to help me out that would be awesome. Below are possibly the key data.

Firmware is 10.6
New 3DSXL

I am comfortable doing solder work but also soft modding, open to learning.

You are on 10.6. At this point you can achieve a downgrade with just a homebrew entry point. For this you would need the game Cubic Ninja. Or The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time with a save dongle or save manager. With either of these game you would be able to follow the guide.

Basically cubic ninja would be about the easiest way to do this and is one of the most sought after game. You could possibly find this game at GameStop for around $35-$40.

OoT can be found for about $25 and a save dongle can be found for about $20.

So either way is a good starting point although Cubic Ninja would be the easiest entry point.

So if I get cubic ninja, and then follow the detailed guide for https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/OTP-Info, I should be good to go right?

Yeah just start here to downgrade to 9.2: https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/9.2.0-Update and then just start at part 1: https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Part-1-(Homebrew) and you'll be good to go! If you want some more confirmation or something, you can always PM me. I check GBATemp every hour or so (except when I'm asleep ofcourse) :)

That's the general idea. Just do not update past where you are. And follow the guide exactly! If you do this and have the least bit of comprehension then you will be just fine!

Again I cannot stress enough not to skip anything in the guide.

Tried multiple guides and kept getting to blank screens and generally non-working dead ends. Giving up on this and getting a sky3ds+

I am not sure if these guides account for the differences in New vs. Old 3DS but I suspect the softwares out there are not fully aligned.

Can you explain what the full problem is?

There is only one guide that 'most' people reccomend, and it is a solid guide and DOES account for differences in devices. Either you havent tried that guide yet, or likely werent following it correctly.

Sorry only just noticed you are the OP lol. Plailects guide is good. If you need help just tell us what youve done and what isnt working and you can be talked through it

FYI this is the guide it doesn't get any more detailed than this.

So I gave another crack at this. It was really annoying since most of the steps the EMUNAN9 and SafeAL9H and Luma generally went to blank screen unless i futzed with holding R or select or some other random button. Once I could launch the applications in paliets guide I finally got the end. Looks like things are working however the big problem I have now is I have no idea how to play .3ds files? Any suggestions or guides on what to do with a hacked system?

You don't use .3ds files anymore, you use .cia. Once you have FBI injected, put the .cia of a game on the root of your SD card. Open FBI, install the cia and voila.

Alternatively, get the cia for CIAngel or freeshop. You'll end up downloading the games from your 3ds and install them that way.

Not to sound dense here, but I got all the way through Paliets guide sucessfully, however I can not get Decrypt9 or rxTools to launch so I can use CIA tools? What am I missing or doing wrong. When I attempt to launch Decrpyt9 from the homebrew launcher it just goes to a black screen and crashes back to the homebrew launcher.

You need to use a9lh.bin payload on an A9LH system.

The following steps are assuming you are using Luma3DS and on A9LH.

Download the latest release of Decrypt9WIP.
Link: https://github.com/d0k3/Decrypt9WIP/releases

1. Copy Decrypt9WIP.bin from the Decrypt9WIP zip to the /luma/payloads/ folder on your SD card.
2. In the /luma/payloads folder, rename Decrypt9WIP.bin to down_Dec9.bin (or any other of the possible options found here: https://github.com/AuroraWright/Luma3DS/wiki/Other-features-and-notes#payload-chainloading)

Depending on how named the Decrypt9 Payload, will depend on what button you'll need to use to boot into it. In the above example you'll need to hold the D-PAD DOWN button at boot time.
