Upgrade the ram to at least 4gb and the cpu to a newer core 2 duo or core 2 quad if possible. Also get a graphics card.

  1. Press the Windows Key + R
  2. Type msconfig in the run box
  3. Go to the startup tab and disable everything from starting with your computer
I imagine loads of junk has been installed on the PC and is starting up, using your limited 2gb of ram.

Also something to keep in mind is that Windows Vista will not get security updates from 11 April 2017, so it might be worth thinking about buying Windows 10 and upgrading to that. Most PC's that can run Windows Vista will have drivers for Windows 10 and work perfectly with it.

If you do that buy some more ram too and the PC will probably run better that it ever did new.

get either a linux distro like lubuntu. don't use vista. really . you can use the official windows 10 usb creation tool to download and create a windows 10 usb drive and install it from there. then you can pirate it(it doesn't hurt the perfomance ;) ).
Also, upgrade the ram, hdd and get a graphics card(don't use the integrated one)

yeah, that's your opinion but the truth is that puppy linux is the lightest linux distribution
here smartass.
there are pros and cons. i am way more confortable using an ubuntu based distro than a random linux distro.
And it's not that light compared to lubuntu.
PS-I tried both in a 512 RAM PC, and lubuntu ran better

Don't forget he probably has DDR2 ram which AFAIK only goes up to 1gb a stick and depending on how many slots that mobo has, he might of already maxed out on slots (assuming 4) with that 2gb of ram (lol 512mb a piece) I would stick with puppy linux or lubuntu as mentioned.

Seriously guys, nobody wants linux. Go push your opinions elsewhere.
@OP do you/your mother also have other well dated electronics? IE tube tv, green screen cell, nintendo wii/wii u, atari (this one not as bad as the wii or wii u but still dated), ect. I think it's time to bury that pc at sea. They are real cheap these days. Just buy a tower if it's all you can afford. (if it's a desktop that is. if it's a laptop then they are cheap to replace) If it was bought new in 2007 that makes it almost 10 years old. That is just too old to do anything with. You will struggle attempting to upgrade the hardware because the processor is dated.

If it were up to me, I would as a matter of troubleshooting clean install Windows 7 SP1, use an activator to activate it, and then upgrade to Windows 10. If the computer is still slower than what I would expect from the hardware, then I would consider using something like Lubuntu instead.
