I am a newby, but being electr. eng I noticed that DSTWO+ and DSTWO seems quite similar, except for memory size+speed

Then the silly question: Can the old DSTWO run Gateway plugin designed for the + (thus getting 3DS compatibility)? Is there any reason why not?

I am aware that supercard will not be interested in the subject, but...

I think it's the added hardware in the DSTWO+ that makes it able to run 3DS games. Besides that, you still need access to 9.2 firmware in order to make the DSTWO+ run 3DS games. If you're on 9.2 you can set up emunand and play 3DS games for free.

It is clearly just opinions, but I don't think the 3DS emu capability is related in any way to HW; In fact DSTWO+ uses a 100% SW plugin (Gateway emulation)...

The confusion surrounding whether or not a regular DSTwo is capable of running 3DS roms comes from the fact that the SuperCard team accidentally packed and sold DSTwo+ plus carts as regular DSTwo. There were a lot of reports of this around the internet

Nope.

Nor, for that matter, should anybody be using the DSTWO+'s Gateway plugin. It has an unfortunate tendency to hardbrick systems.

I do wonder if that's ever going to be addressed.

My OG DStwo is slowly, but steadily, failing, and the convenience factor of a single "do it all" card would justify its price to me. Not to mention, justify a much larger SD card. I might have trouble filling a 32gig microSD for the purpose of .3ds/.3dz roms at times, but I could easily fill a 128GB micro if I could also play .nds and all the DStwo homebrew on the same card.

Why not just install a CFW instead of using a card that poorly shoehorned a Gateway plugin?
DStwo homebrew is excellent. And so far, my attempts at CFW have just been met with failure. Haven't had the chance to try yet, but I still have a bad feeling about updating past its original 4.4... it gives me the same vibe as those that were told by others to update their PS3's past 3.55.

And as I just finished saying, the convenience of a (literal) all-in-one would give me more of a desire to "buy it now".

I guess I don't understand the struggle of installing a CFW. I've installed CFW's on plenty of 3DS/2DS without hassle. The closest I had to a hassle was on my boyfriend's 3DS and even that was an easy fix.
But the issue with using Gateway on non-Gateway products is lack of support and high risks of bricks. You are either better off buying an actual Gateway or simply installing a free CFW.

... and the CFW still wouldn't do anything for the sheer amount of homebrew available on the DStwo.

Case in point, the OG DStwo I have now is constantly butting against the 32gig limit of its SD card. if it were able to have run the 3DS stuff successfully, I'd have a lot more justification to have taken advantage of some of those sales for a 128gig micro to put in there, and maybe even get two of them. Finally have enough room for all I'd want to have in there :P

You probably don't understand because you've probably had it work right the first time. I tried getting it running and all it did was crash and black screen on me. And again nobody would explain why things weren't working. or what I needed to do.

Actually, I had that same problem with my boyfriend's 3DS. To fix it, I backed up his saves, then reformatted the system in the settings. After that, the downgrade worked the first time.

Just follow this tutorial, and you'll be set. It's safe, so long as you make absolutely sure you follow every step exactly as it's written.

Every time I re-read that thing, it confuses me more than ever. And seems hell bent on breaking the Gateway as well; seeing that I still have a legit Gateway 3DS, I'd like to still be able to keep using that.

I have yet to see any proof of a bricked console due to someone not being an idiot and creating one due to user error.

You don't have to be an idiot. You just have to be unlucky and/or uninformed. I had looked around for info on the DSTwo+ for the same reason as the OP, I wanted 1 card to do it all. Despite all of my research, the GateWay Brick Code issue somehow never came up until AFTER I'd bought it and installed the "latest" GW plugin and launcher. Sure enough, hard-bricked. It was only when I started researching the cause of the brick that I found out about the malicious code.

All that being said, I'd stay away from using any of the the SuperCard team's Gateway stuff. Use the DSTwo for DS & emulators and put your big SD card in your 3DS itself for all those 3DS games. :D

(Also, didn't you post this question on the SuperCard forums, too?)

Well in other news you could just get a DSTWO (DS version) and then arm9 hack and install CIAs. All I do is park my DSTWO+ in my game slot to play DS games. There isn't really a good reason to rely on gameway anymore.

I haven't touched the Gateway stuff since my 2DS got bricked. My consoles are all on EmuNand (no a9, yet, 'cause..what I got works. :P). The DSTwo/+ are great emulator cards and I highly recommend them for that purpose. For playing 3DS, non-GW CFW is the way to go! ^_^

I tried the GW launcher a few times and its a good idea, but I guess if you get bricked, I am sorry. The company themselves (sure to cover their own ass, fine) told me they would charge me a new 3DS if I got bricked while writing the review. I tried and tired to brick and couldnt.

You could brick a gateway with the very old launcher (I think it was something like 2.0b2) with a chance of 1:6 if you went into the gw menu, run card diagnostics, enter gw mode and directly power the console off. You can brick the 3DS with a DSTWO Plus when using a middle-dated GW firmware (like 3.6 or something).
