Final Fantasy IX released on Steam

Definitely not the best looking port, below is a screenshot from my Surface Book at 3000x2000. Model looks ok, but as mentioned backgrounds look pretty meh.

But It's still FF9, so I'll play it regardless. Still the best FF on PS1.

Wow, those graphics are horrible. It looks like a badly set-up PS1 emulator!
its the same as a PS1 emulator playing FF9 with the correct settings. the chars themselves and such look a lot better, but the backgrounds stay the same mostly.

I don't see how they could have enhanced the characters but not the backgrounds....
that's how it is when you play FF9 on a PS1 emulator too. the chars themselves get improved a lot. the backgrounds stay mostly the same.

Technically, if they used some filters ala EPSXE, it could look a lot better with less work.
nope. i've played both. the port and ff9 on espxe look pretty much identical.

Hmmm. Interesting.

The last GREAT Final Fantasy.

Yeah, I don't consider Final Fantasy X GREAT. Stay mad.

FFX remaster had a chance to become great but they didn't add cutscene skipping so fuck them.

FFX-2 has the best combat system though (FFXII a close second imho)

Looks like you have never tried a proper GPU plugin, eh?

Comparison time!

Here is how FF9 is SUPPOSED to look in a properly set-up, accurate emulator:

As you can see, nothing sticks up. Everything is the same, 3D _and_ 2D.

Here is a wrongly set up emulator, with EPSXE:

3D models look nice, but the 2D backgrounds look like ass when there's such a stark contrast between the two.

tl;dr: SquareEnix doesn't know how to emul8

your properly set up emulator looks like ass.

But it clearly doesn't, since the backgrounds look like a terrible mess on the first screenshot.
the backgrounds look the same on both pictures. it's just that one is much larger than the other. get me the same map @ same resolution with and without these filters and then we'l check out the backgrounds :) but afaik they always look virtually the same.

The game looks fine especially considering the fact that they lost the original source code and it's running on Unity. Besides, it'll look even better once graphical mods come out.
Gladly paid for it on launch, it's well worth the cash.

I think this is the only redeeming factor in paying for it. Some gui, graphics and sound mods will be enough for me. A mod that creates an alternative story using all the existing (and new) assets will be awesome.
