Yea the frist thing that should of been change was auto boot without holding a button.

Next for linux. You can burn a live linux cd. It boots and runs from the cd drive. You can accress your main harder or usb if needed.

And if your emunand is still intact in the sd card. All should be fine. You just need to downgrade and setup cfw (everything but nand creating). And all should be good.

Do I need to go through the full installation of Ubuntu to get wireless internet connection?

I have everything prepared for smashhax and I have a few concerns
Is smashhax a reliable exploit to use for the downgrade? Has anybody ever used it to downgrade?
I'd also like an opinion on which build of sysUpdater I should use. I've used SafeSysUpdater to downgrade two n3ds xl's successfully, but I can't be too careful with this. PlaiSysUpdater looks like the most safe right now

If it starts downgrading, the entry point doesn't matter. What used to be the case was different entry point affected the rate at which the downgrade process even starts. With svchax, the rate at which exploit works and downgrade starts is really high. So it should be fine. If you're really worried, you will need OOT + Datel Powersave to use OOTHax, or any used 1st/2nd gen Sky3DS and load Cubic Ninja on it.

Thanks for the help
I was originally planning on using my friend's n3ds to install oothax after I bought OOT, but using the information I've gathered here I think I'm better off with smashhax
