I purchased the gateway 3DS card, reading that it would work with my 3DS version somewhere...now I just read that I it only works with 4.5 or older, or 8x to 9.2? Is this true? I'm using a 6.X version 3DS... So, do I have to downgrade my 3DS to 4.5, or upgrade my 3DS to 9.2 in order to use the gateway card? I got this thing and just want to get it running without bricking my 3DS!

OK here is the easiest way to get it working. (You will need to get Cubic ninja or OOT and power save thing) (or wait for new browser exploit to get made pubic and payloads update) (Cubic ninja is the best way)
Update to 10.7
Go to that 3DS ISO site and get the correct update pack (9.2) for your 3DS
Use memchunkhax3 downgrader to downgrade to 9.2
Get Gateways update zip file from their site
Put needed files on 3ds SD card (launcher.zip)
Done.
There are plenty of tutorials around to help you out.
If your 6.0 3ds has a browser you can just put the launcher.DAT file on the SD card and go to the gateway launcher site and have it work right away.

If your 6.0 3ds has a browser you can just put the launcher.DAT file on the SD card and go to the gateway launcher site and have it work right away.

I did this, but the card (red gateway card) doesn't even show up on my main menu. I got as far as backing up my NAND with that browser link. Is the gateway card not showing up because I have a 6.X system, or is there a chance that the card itself is faulty? Here's a pic of the SD slot for my card...do they normally look like this?

Also, I do have Ocarina of Time for 3DS. I also use a DSTWO Supercard to play my DS games, will updating or downgrading make this card unusable?

I had a 3DS 6.x that I downgraded to 4.x using the Gateway downgrader (see their website for the correct firmware pack). Then use the blue gateway card to install the MSET exploit. Once you have that working, you can create an emunand (read the guide especially about copying your files over first, making sure you are in GW mode, etc.). That's the fastest and most reliable way to be "in business" real soon. After that, you can decide what you want to do next (A9LH, CFW, etc.) but spend time learning about it but with a working setup...

One person saying to upgrade...one person saying to downgrade...another saying to ignore everything in the thread. Welp.

My main concern is, will upgrading/downgrading make my DSTWO supercard unusable?

You sound like you're new follow the official Gateway guide I linked for now.

I've read through it, its helpful, but it says very early in the guide that I will need 8.x-9.2 for anything to work (or 4.5 to use the blue card), so for now I need to upgrade or downgrade--and my concern is, will doing either of these make my DSTWO supercard unusable?

You could always just update to 9.2 using sysupdater from HBL using the newer sysupdater versions.

Just make sure have the right files. Gateway won't work if its 9.3 and above sysNAND.

make sure launcher.dat is on the root of your sd card with the red card out of your 3DS and go to go.gateway-3ds.com does it launch the Gateway menu?

Yes. I did get to the Gateway menu and backed up my NAND. Then I followed a guide which said to insert the red card and choose "boot gateway mode", and that just took me back to the 3DS main menu and I didnt see any Gateway card to boot.

it did press the select button the rom selection menu should pop up.
When you can learn to boot into the homebrewmenu and update to 9.2 using minipasta and FBI.

Read the guide setup Emunand and update it to 10.7 when you can

Alright, I'm following this guide....is the microSD card with the boot.dat and Emunand files the one that goes directly into the 3DS SD slot? My games are stored in the 3DS' SD slot, not the micro SD that goes in the red card? If so, what is the purpose of the microSD slot on the red card?

The games are stored in the MicroSD slot on the red card. (.3ds roms?)
Games are only stored in the 3ds SD slot if you install them as a CIA directly to the system.

Makes sense, thanks. How large are most game save files? Are these saves stored in the red card, or the 3DS's SD card? Just wondering since my SD card for the 3DS is only 2GB, whereas I got a larger 32GB microSD for the red card.

If you were using strictly just the Gateway to run games, the games can vary from 500mb -> 3GB for the actual game. The 3DS SD card would be used for game updates, so it shouldn't be too significant.

The main problem is that when you make an emuNAND, it is stored as a hidden partition on the 3DS SD card. That alone takes up 2GB.
I'd recommend at least having a 4GB+ card for the 3DS as I don't even know if it can make the emuNAND with only a 2GB SD Card
