Question:
If I have a legit .CIA on my SD card root and have a homebrewed Old3DSxl from the US, how do I install the .CIA on fw 10.5.0-30U?

again sorry about being newbish. I'm new to 3DS modding and this forum site.

[EDIT]
Another question, how do I run an emulator (gba, nes, snes, etc.) at normal speeds on my current fw... mGBA runs super slow and so do all other emulators I found.

You can't. You can downgrade your system by doing a hardmod (or pay someone to do that). If you want cfw that's your only option.

How do I downgrade, what is a hardmod, and what is a CFW? Again super sorry for being a complete noob.
As I said, you can downgrade by installing a hardmod (that's adding a port on your 3ds to acess the nand (internal storage of the 3ds)). A cfw is a custom Firmware (it can only be used for system Versions 9.2 and below). It allows you to play unsigned cias, so any games you want basically.

You can't install legit CIAs above firmware 10.3 (and by that same token, you can't install unsigned CIAs (i.e. homebrew or pirated/"non-legit" CIAs) above 9.2).

How do I downgrade, what is a hardmod, and what is a CFW? Again super sorry for being a complete noob.

A hard mod is a series of wires and a port that you solder onto your 3DS so that you can modify the contents of the NAND memory chip (this memory chip holds the firmware/OS of your 3DS). It's useful for a number of things, like making backups, restoring backups, and in the case of firmware 10.4 and 10.5, downgrading them so that you can use that as a springboard to downgrade the entire unit to 9.2 or below.

CFW is Custom Firmware, a term that sprang up from the PSP scene. On the 3DS it basically means you're rebooting the system into an environment where you can install non-legit CIAs and run other things like cheating programs without restrictions.

As for how you downgrade, that depends on your situation. Since you're on 10.5, you'd first need to get a hard mod done, do this: http://gbatemp.net/threads/wip-hard...of-native_firm-from-10-4-10-5-to-10-2.412836/ and then use another guide to downgrade from your new "hybrid" 10.5 to 9.2.

If you are new at soldering, I wouldn't recommend that you do the hardmod, I would recommend that you send it out to someone else to do it for you. I would recommend to PM @hundshamer for the hardmod. After you have the hardmod, follow a tutorial to downgrade your 3ds. I know that they where taking about it in this thread https://gbatemp.net/threads/possible-leadway-to-downgrade-10-5-0-30u.412735/, but I don't know if there was an actual tutorial created anywhere on the forum yet. And the cfw will allow you to install cia files.

Thanks for all the help!

One more question... How do I run an emulator (gba, nes, snes, etc.) at normal speeds on my current fw... mGBA runs super slow and so do all other emulators I found.

Since you don't have a cfw the Emulator can't use the full potential of the 3ds. Regardless of that, the old 3ds can not emulate GBA good enough for most games, the old one is just too slow

Well, I might have to disagree with you there. I think that someone with little to no soldering experience could easily perform this hardmod (provided, of course, they are not completely "noobish" and know how to properly use the soldering iron). I have seen many people who have had no experience with soldering before successfully do this hardmod and dump their NAND. Since there are only 3 contacts (technically 4 including GND) to solder to, it is relatively simple. I hope that my tutorial for this Mod will encourage more people to do it.

If he has me do the hardmod, I include the downgrade at no extra charge. I can also downgrade it without a permanent mod at a lower cost.

I wish you knew how many people ask me to repair lifted pads...

Didn't realize you could downgrade even if you didn't have a backup of sysnand.

It's a recent development. It can't be used to jump any further than minor NATIVE_FIRM increments (10.4 -> 10.2 for example is fine). Major ones like 10.4 -> 9.2 aren't possible.

Edit: Removed 10.4-10.5 only, that's not true.

That actually sounds good, 10.2 is better than 10.4, once one 10.2 I'm sure you can use safesysupdater, like the rest, and downgrade even further correct?

Ironically, I don't think "SafeSysUpdater" is very "safe". Many people have been partially bricked using it because it sometimes freezes halfway through the downgrade process. I used Julian's sysUpdater and it worked.

I second this. If you want to make sure that you have the right update files, you should check the md5/sha1 on your computer. By checking the file on your 3ds, it leads to more time for the downgrade progress to happen and a higher change for a freeze, a soft brick, or a hard brick. I have successfully downgraded 2 o3ds from 10.3 to 9.2 with no bricks. I used this version of sysupdater. https://gbatemp.net/attachments/sysupdater-zip.34449/
