I got myself an old R4i GOLD and I was wondering if I would be able to use it on the 3DS. It's the one from r4i-gold.com, I heard that almost all DSi/DSi XL cards should be able to run on 3DS, what can I do?

This is the card...
Step 1: put it in your 3DS. Did it work? If yes, you're done. If not, did you already try step 2? If yes, go to step 3. If not, continue to step 2.
Step 2: is your 3DS exploitable? If yes, install flashcardtimewarp.cia. Return to step 1. If not, continue to step 3.
Step 3: your R4 card is not useable.

I heard that other methods instead of flashcardtimewarp might do it. The 3DS detects it as a Star Wars game, is that a good sign?

So when it crashes the 3DS (power off) when it has wrong kernel is a normal problem? That doesn't mean it won't work?
Well where did you get the kernel from? If a reputable place then it is probaby blocked. Install the flashcardtimewarp cia and see if that changes anything.

I have a vague memory that R4 Gold 3DS is a gateway clone and will therefore need 4.5 and under. Could be wrong though. I think in this case flashcardtimewarp won't help as it's not a DS-mode flashcart. Again could be wrong.

Actually my card wasn't intended for 3DS, but Acekard 2i wasn't as well... what can I do?

Install the flashcardtimewarp. Try a few different kernels. If nothing doing then give up. (Maybe search the forums for the name of your flashcard to see if anybody has ever had it working).

Already tried that but every result is about the R4i GOLD 3DS and not about the R4i GOLD.

You can find kernel downloads here (under r4i-gold.com): https://www.linfoxdomain.com/nintendo/ds/#dlscat136i
There are no downloads for firmware updates so the cart is likely not upgradable which means it won't work on 3DS (even with flashcarttimewarp)

I can't install updates (not kernel, but real UPDATES) will that matter?
hmm yes updates fought off the ap implemented in the console
in 4.1 nintendo introduced a second check in addition to the whitelist (flashcardtimewarp.cia is the old whitelist) this one hidden inside the twl-frim
as a result some ds flashcards require the twl-firm to be downgraded as well (example ak2i)

@SylverReZ, atleast wiimmfii went fine although people only use it for Mario kart Wii
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
At least if they ban you for cheating, get another Wii. They're cheap as chips.

Remember when RiiShop was a thing?
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
    not really
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
It got shutdown because somebody "accidentally" leaked the database for the amount of people using the beta.

RiiShop is the laziest way of downloading Wii games. Did somebody not think of this through?
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
although i ended up accidentally changing my nand with no way of going back bc i didn't know you needed a gamecube controller to restore it (i have a wii minus/1.1, which doesn't have gamecube controller support)
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@BakerMan, I think you're talking about the recovery mode that the SaveMii used, and also was to restore softbricked systems.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
If your NAND was hardbricked, then just buy another Wii. Or go with the dirty NAND flasher method.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
and if i find the sd card i have my NAND backed up on, i can not only restore the NAND if i solder the right part in, but i can also put my NAND on dolphin, then i can play dolphin online, like PMEX Remix or MKWii Riibalanced
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
    Brb
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@BakerMan, Oh yeah, that was a thing too. Dolphin does support Wiimmfi.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
yeah you just need to put your NAND backup with wiimmfi on it
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
ngl i feel like if a bunch of my friends have wiis and know how to get wiimmfi and back up their NAND, then we could do a PMEX Remix tournament
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
maybe even add UMVC3/DBFZ and make it a biathlon/triathlon
