I'm 100% certain this is false, do you have any source for this?
Hmm, I might have remembered incorrectly. Just checked, found a DSi with a TN display but a DSi XL with an IPS display. Or at least, the XL doesn't seem to lose colour when viewing the top screen from extreme angles. Will update the article accordingly.

Can you post pics please? Keep in mind some TNs are better than others.

Here's a reference photo I copied onto both DS units:

This is the overview of both consoles, viewed from a 90º angle:

And here are angled views of both the upper and lower screens:

The XL seems to have slightly better colour saturation and contrast when viewed from 90º, and colours don't get washed out even when viewed from very slanted angles. This would seem to fit in with Nintendo's idea of having wider viewing angles on the XL for spectators standing around the player.

(As a side note, I also tested taking photos of the same objects under the same lighting at the same angle with both units, the DSi XL camera has far better colour saturation than the standard DSi, which not only couldn't capture colours accurately but also seemed to overexpose them too. But that's a story for another time.)

Interesting, that has to be an IPS screen. Thanks.
Just remembered something - The original DS Phat used frontlit displays that had washed out colours and poor contrast while the DS lite and DSi used dual backlit displays. I must've mistaken the difference in image quality being due to IPS rather than the lighting method. My bad. :)

The DS Fat displays are backlit, it's just that they used an LCD layer similar to that of the GBA (excluding AGS-101).

My O3DSXL(black) has a TN and my ladies N3DSXL(black) has an IPS, the difference is very noticeable. The IPS has deeper colors, doesn't wash out, and holds its vibrancy better in sun light. It hides compression in Netflix better than the O3DS with deeper blacks too. (The N3DS already has better speakers, they're much clearer, fuller and a pinch louder) I frequently find myself jealous of the IPS displays, not even the fact the N3DS is faster.

After examining various N3DS and N3DSXL units, it looks like the regular sized one comes with TN displays while some XL units have IPS displays. However, the TN display inside the N3DS seems to be better quality than the O3DS.

Last I checked, TN panels will completely invert colors when viewed at an extreme angle from the bottom, like here; http://media.gamersnexus.net/images/media/2015/features/tn-display-angle.jpg
To me it doesn't look like any 3DS use TN, even the o3DS/XL, of all the pictures I've seen in various threads. Just wanted to point this out, although I'm sure other people have brought it up at some point.
