Hacking 7.1.0-16E O3DS with browser rxtools question...

So I put CFW on my O3DS last year using this guide.

I'm wondering if I am able to have a more recent CFW setup, ideally one that "cold boots" into CTR manager and then RX Tools. Since it's on 7.1 at the moment will I need to update to 9.2 and just follow new guides, or can it be done on 7.1?
