I softbricked FOUR times now. I'm considering doing a factory reset and trying again, but mmm I'm not sure, there might be something I don't want to lose.

I'm pretty much in the same situation as you (except n3DSXL 10.3.0-28E). Soft-bricked 6 times (tried different things, formatted SD, checked again and again CIA files...)
I've seen here and there that it's advised to format the 3DS but I don't want to do it unless I can restore my friends list and Mii Plaza data (at least Puzzle Swap, I somehow got to like those 3D pictures/animations). If I understand correctly we can back up our saves from digital games using svdt and restore them later using the same tool (once these games are back on SD) (I'd appreciate if anyone could confirm about the restore part). NNID can be restored just by linking it back to the n3DS (and so we can get back our eShop games). But it doesn't allow anything for Mii Plaza or Friend Codes...

I fucking did it. I factory reset my 3DS, used a mostly clean SD, no menuhax installed, and used OoThax.

Time to change your signature then! Congratulations!

I've been debating about downgrading my New 3DS just because I want CFW support and eShop access, but I'll probably hold off until KTM is released because of the current risk.

Heh thanks for the reminder.

So far, with the latest build provided in the guide, hard bricks don't seem to be possible as long as you don't do something like get the wrong CIAs. Guess just infuriating shit like what happened to me lol. But yeah it's coming tomorrow allegedly so might as well wait if you're not as impatient as me.

I'm pretty impatient myself as this would breathe some new life into my 3DS. I've mostly heard that KTM will mostly just involve Hash checking, but I really don't want to risk too much.

Good for you @730 ;)

Anyone knows (= can list) what formatting does that I can do manually? (and that I can't) That may help finding the culprit, I may be willing to delete some stuff manually...

Nevermind, I finally decided to format and it worked! I would also note that before formatting, I couldn't use browserhax when shufflehax (or just shuffling themes, no hax) was installed. And after formatting, browserhax was still available once menuhax was installed. In homebrew launcher on 10.3 I couldn't copy my save data backups, hopefully, it'll be possible now that I'm on 9.2...

I'm pretty much in the same boat as this guy. I'm constantly softbricking and I feel like formatting the 3ds would fix it, but I really don't want to lose my NNID, Friends List, Puzzles from Mii Plaza, etc.

Is there any way I can keep it or put it back after downgrading? NNID is obviously the most important.

I believe the NNID is permanently kept on the system even after a format, but I might be incorrect. It is possible to get rid of it through a system transfer or to call Nintendo up and ask them to unlink it.

Not sure about the Friends list though.

Formatting your 3DS doesn't destroy your NNID. You can re-link it later.
You'll lose your mii plaza progress, and friend codes. Message everyone to get them to re-add your new friend code afterwards or something.

At the end of the day, are mii plaza puzzles more important than cfw? :P

Just for preparation, is there a tutorial anywhere for relinking it? I wanna make sure I prepare safely

Did you factory reset 10.3, then do the downgrade?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I wouldnt use SysUpdator on n3DS's. Its a really high brick rate. I would wait for KTM to release as its coming within the next few hours :O
Justpingo changed his estimate to "sometime before Sunday".

I'm on an o3ds though. But now that I know about KTM I think I'll wait.
That high brick rate is bullshit, if you use the latest build, and don't do stupid crap such as using the wrong CIAs, then at most you'll softbrick. And besides, o3DS is apparently much better to do this on.

Yes.

Yes.
o3ds is practically guarenteed to either softbrick or work.
I downgraded and updated like 10+ times trying to get this to work.

Yes.

What is the folder name that you're supposed to put the cia files on in your SD card? There's another thread where people are arguing if it's "update" or "updates".

Yes.

I'm not waiting because of that, I'm waiting because maybe KTM means I don't have to format system memory. I've been constantly softbricking anyway so that wasn't my concern at all. :)
