HI Guys,

I've got a wii u softmodded to allow me to run wii games using usbloader gx all works fine, however I've just purchased a new 2TB Seagate Expansion external drive.

I've tried to format the drive using WBFS manager and it just throws up an error of unable to format the drive...I've also tried using the ncwbfstool - this allows me to format the drive to WBFS...it also allows me to copy games over from my existing 500GB WBFS drive but when I try to play the games in wii mode on the wii u using USBLoader GX the title screen of the games when I load them are blank and when I go to play the game, I just get a blank screen.

Can anyone please help????

Ive got a 2tb Seagate expasion 2.5" working verywell with usbloader gx into my Wii u and Wii.

1° Its a ntfs format.
2° you dont need a wbfs format
3° i recommend fat32 64k.

I also have a 3Tb seagate Backplus 3.5 formated qith fat32 64k working with Usbloader gx With my wii u. BUT game list load very slow.

So you can play wii games with a ntfs ou fat32 format. But i recommend Fat32 64k if you want play Wii games. GC games and emulators from same external hd. Because ntfs will only play wii games

Use Wii Backup Manager, that's what I use with my HDD on Fat32, select the HDD on Drive 1 or Drive 2 , select the .Iso or .wbfs or whatever on files and then choose the option "transfer", you can search more how to use it if it wasn't clear enough.
http://www.wiibackupmanager.co.uk/downloads.html

For GC Games with Nintendon't, you can use DMToolBox, just put the .ISO and select the output (The HDD) and press Install, that's it.

So I just read this topic and learned something new I guess. Ever since I first hacked my Wii (right before the Wii U was released), I've been using flash drives in WFBS format to hold any Wii backups I had for use with USB Loaders, and using WFBS managers to setup the drives. I don't know if USB Loaders used to only read WFBS drives or if the guide I read back then was just bad, but the fact that I can use a drive in another format (specifically fat32) is news to me. If I read the responses in this topic correctly and I can have my Wii backup drive in a format that can be read by Windows Explorer, that is preferable for me.

Of course, I'd run into a problem with that right off the bat. I recently downloaded Wii Backup Manager to move all my Wii backups to a higher capacity (32 -> 64 GB) micro flash drive, and since then I've filled it with even more Wii games. Now I don't have any other flash drive with a capacity of 64 GB or more, so I can't just transfer the games directly to another fat32 drive. And if I understand that stuff correctly, formatting the drive I'm using would wipe everything on it, so I'd have to first transfer all the Wii games elsewhere... only to waste more time after formatting to transfer them all back. Now, I do have a 3 TB external hard drive where I have the Wii backups stored in the first place... but with all of the Wii isos in their own folders, adding the games to a new flash drive from the 3 TB drive is tedious in its own way. Is there any way I can "convert" the flash drive to another format while retaining its contents? If not, what would be the fastest/easiest way for me to setup a fat32 drive with my Wii backups? Do I have to setup the drive in a certain manner (using Wii Backup Manager) or can I just drop every Wii iso into the root of the drive if I feel so inclined?

On a related note, I have the smaller 32 GB flash drive currently setup for use with the Nintedont HB app. After confirming it was in fat32 format, I tried using it with USB Loader GX, which I believe can run GC backups by some means. From the messages I got it seems like USB Loader GX recognized the fat32 drive but none of the GC isos I had on it. Playing with the app's settings didn't seem to help it load the GC games. How would I setup the drive with the GC backups so that the games would be recognized by USB Loader GX, and would doing so make it impossible to use it with Nintendont as well?

I appreciate any help given with my questions.

Yes, you can change to another Format without losing anything, I did that like 3 years ago when I had the same problem, I used a program called "wbfs2fat32"
Here you have it https://www.dropbox.com/s/oqblwrxd5ab6tsz/wbfs2fat32.rar

Just load the program as an administrator, select your WBFS Drive and click "Convert to Fat32" and that's pretty much it. You can use a Fat32 for GC Games for Nintendon't, but I think that you can't use Nintendon't with a NTFS Drive.
Tell us if this worked for you :)

Edit: Also, I forgot, the HDD will be ready with all the games in the folders that they need to be, Wii Backup Manager will also put the games like they should go so when it's done, you can just plug it again on your Wii/Wii U and it will work like before, if a game is bigger than 4GB (Like SSBB, Xenoblade, The Last Story, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Metroid Other M...), it will automaticly cut the game in 2 different files but it will work just fine.

It's weird... I converted the drive to Fat32 format just fine, and the games were organized quite nicely afterwards. So thanks a ton for pointing out that program. The only thing is that when starting USBLoader GX, the drive doesn't get recognized automatically; instead it only get recognized when I cancel the HDD initialization thing so that the app says "Mounting USB Port to 1". Afterwards, the Wii games seem to display and run just fine, but I'm not sure why the flash drive doesn't get recognized right away. Do I need to change some settings around in USB Loader GX after changing the drive format to fix this? I've had issues with my flash drives being recognized before in WFBS format, so I've played around with the app's options in the past (ex: setting USB port to both ports since I use a few different drives). For all I know something I changed before may have been the cause of those problems and possibly this one I have now...

You can if it's Fat32, if it doesn't work you can delete the folder and that's it.
And no, only some HDD's work with the Wii/Wii U, but you don't lose anything trying to play a game and seeing if it works, a lot of HDD's works with the system anyway.
Get New Super Mario Bros Wii or Wii Sports that are tiny games and try if they work on the console.
If you want a HDD for Backups of Wii the best ones are from Western Digital, I think that every WD HDD will work just fine, I have a 500GB one and 0 problems.

Use Ultimate USB Loader GX on the lastest version or Configurable USB Loader, older versions of loaders don't load Fat32 or NTFS, I personally prefer Configurable USB Loader (Also called CFG USB Loader) because I like how it looks more than any other, I never had any problem with it (I had some problems with Ultimate USB Loader GX and a lot with WiiFlow), it shows GC Games and Wii Games on the same loader and It loads every HDD Format right now.

I recommend you to get CFG USB Loader right now, the best loader if you ask me :P

Hmm, Configurable USB Loader does seem to load it properly, but I kinda prefer the more "official" look of USB Loader GX. :P When you say "Ultimate" USB Loader GX, what exactly are you referring to? The version of USB Loader GX I have is revision 1256. I did notice in the official USB Loader GX topic that there's mention of a newer revision (1260) for the app... and (as per usual) it doesn't seem to update through the in-app updater. I guess I'll just try to find a download link for r1260 and replace the app's files manually. I dunno exactly what's been changed since r1256, but (assuming it's even been released) hopefully the new version will fix my problems.

In our Spanish forums I don't know why but it's called "Ultimate USB Loader GX", I was thinking that was a different version or something, but it's the same one lol.
It's weird, USB Loader GX works with my Fat32 HDD, I don't use it usually but it still works, maybe you need to change something on the Configuration of the Loader or something? I would like to check if there is anything to change on the Loader but I can't use it right now, sorry.

If you had problems with your HDD before because not every HDD works flawlessly on vWii mode I think that is probably that, because USB Loader GX at this point should work without any problem with Fat32 Drives (And it does).

Tell me if it worked for you, good luck!

Im waiting on 5.5.0 so it'll be a while
Also, nothing else is saved to the HDD right apart from games ISO files right?

So i can have multiple HDDs for storing games and not worry about transferring any extra files? (I want to use the last <100 GB for Wii U back ups before I get say another if u know what i mean)

Checking the official topic some more I don't think r1260 has been released. Looking on the SourceForge page I see a download for "R1256-1257", but when I download that I see the boot.dol file has the same "Date modified" as the boot.dol file for the app on my SD card. I dunno, but I think I have the latest version of the USB Loader GX app. As far as settings go, (after backing up the config files) I just tried reverting to default settings, and I still get the same issue where the app doesn't recognize the drive until I cancel the HDD initialization. I honestly have no idea why (if it recognized the flash drive right away in WFBS format) it wouldn't do so when it's in Fat32 format. And seeing how much longer it's taking to load the games after changing the format of the flash drive, now I kinda regret doing so... There might be a problem with the flash drive itself, or maybe the way it's setup, but regardless if I can't resolve this issue I may as well change it back to WFBS.

Edit: Well, after reloading the USB Loader GX app half a dozen times (with some full system shutdowns in between) the issue seems to have resolved itself. Like, the flash drive (in Fat32 format) gets recognized immediately and the games load lightning fast. Not sure why, as I didn't do much of anything since reverting the settings (which initially resolved nothing), but I'm hardly complaining. ^_^ I just hope that I don't see the error again after I start tweaking the settings back to what they were...

Just use Configurable USB Loader, it's just so good.
I will check if I see something on my USB Loader GX and I will tell you.

You can have HBC and Wii Loaders and Homebrew for vWii on 5.5.0 right now, you just need a game with an exploit, so you don't need to wait.
The games are:

  • LEGO Batman
  • Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World
  • LEGO Indiana Jones
  • LEGO Star Wars
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl
  • Yu-Gi-Oh 5D's Wheelie Breakers

Also, you should also see this https://gbatemp.net/threads/basic-dos-and-do-nots-of-vwii-modding.339337/

And yes, on the HDD there only will be the .iso files, the Loader is on the SD Card (Or you can have it on each HDD if you want) and the savefiles will be on the Console.

I see, i already have a hacked wii so I dont really have any interest in vWii, are there any differences
