What do you mean by open archive? Are you able to do that within the program mentioned in the OP?

What I meant was that there are a lot of cia's and you would typically get them in an archive [i.e. zip, rar, 7zip files etc]. A lot of archival program will let you open it and delete a file from it directly. Alternatively you could extract them to the 'updates' folder on your 3DS and then delete it, doesn't really matter as what point you do it.

If I had your 3ds on me right now I could probably find out :P

I've worked out from other posts, it's not limited tonew or old, and it's not limited a specific region either.
The current game that is inserted, maybe?

Come to think of it, this whole time, Animal Crossing New Leaf never left my 3ds.
What about you @GoodCookie88 ?
Also the class of the SD card inserted, if it is a SD to Micro SD adapter, etc.
I'll try to make a table of variables and I will let you guys fill it in.

I tried with the original 3ds sd formatted it.
And a original sandisk micro sd card with a adapter
