Hey guys. New to this so I just have a few (probably noobish) questions I want to ask before attempting to use NTR CFW 3.1

I have a Japanese 3ds (NOT a new 3ds) at version 7.0.1-16J. My main goal is not piracy or anything like that. I just want to be able to use the English Translation patch for Monster Hunter X. I'm getting the actual japanese retail cartridge of MHX in the mail today so it's not pirating or anything.

Anyway, to use the English translation patch, I need to install NTR CFW 3.1, then a NTR plug in. In the installation guide there is also a "Google sheets" in the "Downloads" section, but that's just confusing the heck out of me.

First things first.

I'm pretty sure I can install NTR CFW 3.1 on an old 3ds, not just a new 3ds. I just want to confirm that with anyone here.

Also, this is the installation guide for installing NTR CFW 3.1

"3. How to install NTR CFW 3.1? (BootNTR):
1 Install the BootNTR.cia in Sysnand or Emunand, copy the ntr.bin into the sd card.
2 Execute the BootNTR application in home menu then it will boots NTR CFW."

Why does it say in Sysnand OR Emunand? This confuses the heck out of a noob like me. Is one a better choice than the other? Do I definitely have both? When I look at my SD card on my computer, will I see one folder that says SysNAND and one that says EmuNAND? If so, which is my best choice? I haven't gotten a chance to put the SD card that 's in my 3ds in a computer yet to see what folders it has within it. I'm actually going to do that in about an hour or so (my computer doesn't have an SD reader so I need to go to a friend's house).

The second bit of confusion for me is as follows. The MHX translation patch installation guide says this..

"Copy the contents of the "NTR" folder (from NTR Plugin link) onto your SD Card. (There should be a folder called mhx at the root)"

The folder called "mhx". Is that at the root of the NTR folder or the root of my SD card? I'm assuming the NTR folder. If that's the case, where exactly do I install it on my SD card? Just drag the folder over? There's no folder I need to put the "Mhx" folder into within the SD card?

I know these might seem like stupid or anal questions, but it causes me stress when these guides are have vague instructions for installation, for some unknown reason assuming that we already know the things left out. I'd very much appreciate any and all help!!

EDIT: Also another question For the installation part of "How to install NTR CFW 3.1? (BootNTR):", it says "Copy the ntr.bin into the sd card". Again I'm confused as to where in the SD card I copy this file to? Right on the first thing that pops up with the folders? Not sure if I'd call it the root of the sd card. >_< I don't know the terminology. The first window that'll pop up when I plug in the darn thing to the computer!!

Thank you very much for the response. However I'm a bit confused by it. I'm not using a N3ds for this, I'm actually usuing an old japanese 3ds that has version 7.0.1. I guess what really confuses me is that the instruction guide for installing NTR seems extremely short and while a bit vague, has very simple steps. Same for the NTR plug in that comes after based off of what it says in the translation patch installation guide. However the guide you linked me to seems to have a heck of lot more work. I suppose I'm just confused as to why the guides differ to such an extent.

This isn't to say I'm not grateful for your help. It's just that I seem to be getting more confused every time someone replies to me, as it's always something completely different from the last person who responded. :(

the guide in his sig is about setting up cfw on a n3ds here is a guide for cfw on o3ds [Tutorial] Installing rxTools Custom Firmware - (Old 3DS and 2DS)
and the one in his sig and the one i linked both are longer and more detailed than the ntr guide because ntr is packed the same way a installable 3ds rom (.cia) and in order to install a .cia you need to first install any other cfw first (thats why i linked for you the above guide)

basically its like you are trying to run a linux app on your windows machine because it can run linux even it does not have linux set up
you need to start at the beginning

if you want ntr then you need cfw first
here are some terms that the 3ds community uses

nand = memory chip with firmware
sysnand = your consoles internal memory chip with systems (unique) firmware built onto it
emunand = a emulated copy of your sysnand on your sd card
.cia = a installable 3ds app or game
fbi = a .cia installer

Long story short,
Before you even wonder about installing something to sysnand or Emunand you need to setup Emunand in the first place. Use any of the given tutorials to achieve this. You can't use mine since you don't have a browser on your 7.x o3ds.

Basically you need to format Emunand using cubic ninja and gateway, or the new Emunand9 tool, but this was just released today and afaik there is no tutorial that implements this tool yet. But any given tutorial that leads you through cfw setup on o3ds, like the one he before me linked, should get you started. Once you have Emunand running, you can as well use my guide to set up a Bootmanager and just replace rxtools with ntr.
