I've got an original 3DS still on 9.9 but I'm going to have to update very soon to get some limited time downloads in a few games and in the theme shop, not to mention upcoming eshop sales. I haven't updated yet due to finding out that the newest thing to offer it, menuhax, suddenly had a d@mn patch so you couldn't use it anymore.

I've tried to search and there's just too many hundreds of pages in many various threads to see a post answering this, but what I want to know is...

What can I use to get a custom theme on a 3DS I need to update to the latest firmware 10.3?

I'm not looking to do anything special with this particular 3DS, all I wanted to so was install a custom theme with custom music and sfx, that's it, and preferrably have it load on start.

Can anyone tell me what options there are?

By the way, I do have cubic ninja and OoT, if that matters, but prefer something in line with menuhax or themehax.

custom themes still work. but menuhax doesn't work past 10.1 right now. if you update to 10.3 your only options are Cubic Ninja or OOT3D (or Ironfall if you have that).

You won't be able to have menuhax working on 10.3
You can however use CHMM2 or 3ds_homemenu_extdata_tool to import a custom theme into the theme cache which should let you have custom theme on your home menu for as long as you don't change to another theme in theme selector.

menuhax and themehax does not work on 10.2+

I said that in my OP.

Does this work without having emunand and stuff? I never did anything special with this 3DS except for doing a non-permanant hardware mod backup of it when it was on 9.5.0 before the browser exploit was patched, and only in case I couldn't get nother 3DS that could use it.

So, just to confirm, I can still give my ordinary unaltered sysnand 3DS a custom theme with everything working that any other 3DS theme can have, fully functional (including looping bgm and sfx), if I update to 10.3?

Also, are those the only options or is anything else being worked on? No way to overwrite some junk theme you buy off the theme shop with your own data that can load anytime you pick it?

Yes to first, no to second.

1st just overwrite what's in cache in extdata which you /can/ do.
2nd would require modifying the file that contains your paid themes which in turn would break the signature and make it unusable. Not to mention we wouldn't be able to just modify it like that because it would break checksums and it wouldn't work anyway; you'd need a way to actually create proper .cias and install them for this.

Is there a way yet to do the 2nd, installing a theme using proper .cias? I'm wondering if it's possible to do this before updating to 10.3 and still have the custom theme(s) installed after the update. I recall that there's a few games that actually install a theme they come with that's not downloaded from the shop, but I may be wrong.

if I'm reading this correctly then you can't install .cia files if your sysnand is above 9.2.

you can still use custom themes with CHMM2 or something, that's never changed.

Glad I bought a second 3DS with 9.2.0-20 to use for any homebrew stuff. :) My main 3DS just gets a custom theme.

Oh, I should ask quick, Ninjhax works with the cartridge version of Cubic Ninja, right? Then from there I can still install some stuff after updating to 10.3, or do I need to install these things BEFORE updating?

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to find out from you guys that all know your stuff. I just don't have much time at the moment to search around and I'll need to take care of this eshop business by the end of the week. Thank you all for helping.

I mean, do I need to use ninjhax and/or use something like the CHMM2 or 3ds_homemenu_extdata_tool before I update my main 3DS' sysnand to 10.3 or can I just update right now and use those all at a later date to add my theme?

You can update from 10.2 to 10.3 and still use ninjhax via Cubic Ninja just fine. :P
