in short: yes, if you're 10.1 or below

if you're 9.3.0-X - 10.1.0-27, anything that requires a Nintendo Network ID (eShop, NNID settings, Miiverse, etc.) is broken.

for 10.2.0-28 and 10.3.0-28, since that last number (-28) hasn't changed, both can still use most things fine for now (10.2 eShop still requires HANS).

Yeah, I just got my NNID onto my N3DS too. Was only able to download Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate before the update kicked me out of the eshop. RIP in HANS (HANS 2.0 coming never soon)

Why can't we have normal Homebrew developers who can release Kernel Exploits like any normal person would?
Piracy my a**, People want em CFWs and boosts because of a Kernel Exploit.

Also don't tell me that Kernel Exploits take a lot of work, of course I know they do, but come on, we ALL know one of these Exploit makers has one up their sleeve.

That's because they don't have one. Even if they did why would they release them for free? That's just out right stupid. If anyone has a 9.3+ kernel exploit, they can easily sell it to Gateway or something and make tons of money.

If you think anyone uses Kernel Exploit for anything other than piracy then HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH. You hax users already have almost everything that we CFW users have. What more do you want besides piracy?

Emunand, and how about better protection from Nintendo? If you're on an O3DS with Emunand, you're basically set. Nintendo can't stop you from accessing the eShop or anything. If you rely on userland exploits, you basically are at two peoples' mercy (yellows8 and smea) to release fixes everytime Nintendo sneezes, tinkers with the eShop, or breaks exploits.. etc. And you're dependent on smea's HBL to access homebrew, rather than being able to use the Home Menu.

Oh yeah, and kernel gives dynarec for better emu performance. Yeah people say something similiar can be done in userland, but it's clearly a lot of extra work since nobody has delivered on that yet. Sure, kernel exploits take a ton of time to develop, but once they're out there, look at how little further maintenance or upkeep is required to keep them working perfectly after multiple updates from Nintendo (thanks to Emunand).

There's a lot of reasons, don't be so narrow-minded.

I got a 9.0 N3DS specifically for dynarec and that linux project that might unfortunately be dead.

For anybody interested in emulators, dynarec is a pretty big deal. It's what makes PSX playable, and full speed Golden Sun battles are awesome.

I've also heard that the eshop got shut down for non-kernel users, which is a pretty big deal.

Well, that's how it goes when the community is dependent on a single closed-source app written by like one guy.

people cant be trusted. and angry people lashing out at the hand that provided them aren't exactly setting a good example for like that one guy

Guess what? You totally miss the point. Lol
Even if someone finds kernel exploit and tries to sells it,no one would buy it from them. Why?
Just think about it for a little while ;)

Exactly, people can't be trusted. If he quits, the scene is boned till somebody takes up the mantle.

Everything riding on one thing working is a terrible idea. Look at what happened to the Death Star. One exhaust pipe gets ruined and BAM, the Galactic Empire loses years of research and funding as well as an expendable number of Storm Trooper lives.

I'm less worried about Smea not releasing his source(though that bugs me) than I am that nobody else is putting out payloads.
