I just ordered a Sky3ds fro Peachds and I had a few questions I wasn't so sure about.

I understand that if you go online, you have the potential of getting banned. But does spotpass count?

Can you update games and install dlc?

What exactly is the template? I don't really understand what it's for.

Other than those, I get everything else. (I think?)

Template is what Sky3DS flashcart uses to emulate any specific game cartridge. It usually has most games released so that it always knows how to emulate the game cartridge from any specific game you want. That's why it gets updated often when new games are released.

And yes, you have potential (pretty sure chance actually) of getting banned when playing any game online. And online means online functionalities that involves interactions with others. Not sure of spotpass counts. It's easier to get banned with some games than others supposedly but it's all suppositions anyway.

And yes, as long as you use the latest firmware on your console, you can access eShop and install game updates or DLC that way as if you had the real game.

Just to know for sure, what's the firmware of your console?

Since you are using sky3ds I can assume you are on 9.3 and above. And if that is the case you can just update your console and then have access to eshop. In eshop you can get game updates the normal way. DLC the same thing.

The template is used for the sky card which contains the header information for the games you load on the sky3ds card. If you are planning on going online, go look in the tutorial section for "No ban no sky" as it will explain how to use a private header with your template. To get the private header depends on if you have or no someone with a exploitable 9.2 or below 3ds or a power save device. You use those to extract the header from a cheap game you can get for say under $2. After getting the private header from that game do not give it away. Either keep it somewhere you can find later or toss it.

So you can use any private header for any type of game? There's no type of restriction?

In that case, just update so that you can access eShop if you want.

Yes, any header will work. You just need to extract it from a real cartridge somehow (there's different methods) and then use it for the roms you play. The tool that was said above is specifically created for Sky3DS and it helps to do that once you already have the header.

And a quirk about the sky template is that sometimes the manufacturer is wrong to allow you to go online. For example Smash bros in the template is AE. But the personal dump we had of smash was a C2. So at first we couldn't go online but once we changed the template for smash to C2 online play could be accessed.

And a tip for private headers is to use one with the C2 manufacturer as that will cover the vast majority of the games to play online. The other 2 manufacturers is less common which sometimes you can just change the manufacturer and it works. But adjust that when the time comes and you can't get online for that particular game. Ask in the no ban no sky thread and someone will help you out when needed.
