Just realizing now how cool this thing from Sony could be for it's price... If it only was able to play all Vita games, retro consoles and be a media player.

Out of it's original box, this does far from seem to be the case.

If I were to buy one now, can I hack it?
And will the hacking allow me to play all Vita games; emulators and consume media from USB/Netflix/Youtube?

Cheers.

Since firmware 3.52 came out, it's been quite a bit harder to actually hack the vita. Thanks to sony's patch that causes the exploit game to crash after loading 1 mb of homebrew applications. The application Ark-2 that's used to play all psp games crashes the console, the native hack "Rejuvenate" is patched out thanks to psm dev being gone. So all you can load for homebrew on the latest firmware are emulators, but since custom bubbles might happen, that could maybe be a thing that picks up for 3.52. (There may be a few errors, but that should be mostly right.)

If you're interested in a hackable machine to use as a media device and play emulators, you're better off with a Wii or a PSP.

As others have said, the hackable portion of the PSTV (and PS Vita) only really allows playing PSP "backups", and more recently some homebrew. However, the limitations are such that it depends on whether you have the right firmware, the right exploitable game, and possibly an up-to-date system to transfer games to the PSTV. Then depending on the firmware version you're on and the exploit used, there can be compatibility issues on top of that.

The short version is, the PSTV is simply not worth it as a hacked device alone (in my opinion). If you're interested in using it for its official features like remote play from a PS4 and playing (legally purchased) PS Vita games, it may be worth it for you. After all, they recently dropped to $40 and there have been sales that let them go for as cheap as $20, so Sony's practically giving the hardware away.

pstv is well worth it if you can get one on 3.20 firmware, you can play all psp roms, PS1 roms, all the old emulators snes, megadrive etc... there is also a way to play the vita games that sony doesnt want you to play but its not public. well worth £29.99 delivered in my opinion.

@AncientBoi, Yeah, believe you can do PSP games as well. But a Pi5 is much powerful in comparison.

Not sure about other models of Pi4 but the Pi 4 B with 8GBs OCed to 2Ghz handles PSP really great except like 1 game I found and it is playable it just looks bad lol Motor Storm Arctic something or other.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Other games I can have turned up to like 2X and all kinds of enhancements, Motorstorm hmmm nope 1X and no enhancements lol

I will admit that one does seem more interesting than the usual Ambernic ones, and I already liked those.

    I dread the price point.

This looks like one of their premium models, so... $150 :glare:

    To me that seems reasonable.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I mean since basically all the games are errmmm free lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean yeah sure but the specs are the same as a $50 model, it's just those pesky "quality of life" things driving up the price, like an actually working speaker, or buttons that don't melt, and stuff like that.

I think all in my Pi 4 was well north of 200 bucks 150ish for the Pi 4 the case the fancy cooler, then like 70 for the 500GB MicroSD then like 70 for the Xbox controller. But honestly it's a nice set up I really enjoy and to me was worth every penny. (even bought more controllers for 2 or 4 player games.) hmmm have never played any 2 player games yet :(
  • Veho @ Veho:
Yeah that's what I hate about the RPi, it's supposedly $30 or something but it takes an additional $200 of accessories to actually turn it into a working something.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
yes that's the expensive part lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean sure it's flexible and stuff but so is uremum but it's fiddly.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah a lot of it I consider a hobby, using Batocera I am constantly adjusting the collection adding and removing stuff, scraping the artwork. Haven't even started on some music for the theme... Also way down the road I am considering attempting to do a WiiFlow knock off lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I want everything served on a plate plz ktnx, "work" is too much work for me.
  • Veho @ Veho:
Hmm, with that in mind, maybe a complete out-the-box solution with all the games collected, pacthed and optimized for me would be worth $150

Yeah it's all choice and that's a good thing :)
