I have a n3ds XL on 9.2 firmware (USA) and I use gateway but recently I have noticed a few issues with the battery.

I always shutdown my 3ds because I notice that the battery lasts only a few hours when I have the 3ds on sleep mode (not sure if that is what it is called, which is when a game is running but you just close the lid)

My SO has a n3ds on 9.9 and I know a few other 3ds users that do not use gateway (emunand) and their battery lasts way longer (hours) than mine does and I am not sure what might be causing it.

Eg, If i have a game running on emunand, i close the lid and the 3ds is fully charged it seems that under sleep mode it takes around 4-5 hours for the LED light to start turning red.

The 3ds is about 2 months old, so I dont think it's the battery.

I did notice that according to the game usage of the sysnand it says that I spend hour and hours using the settings application, which is how I launch gateway (mset) might it be that for some reason both sysnand and emunand might be consuming battery power?

I am opened to ideas and opinions, I would like to know if others have noticed the same thing.

With the red GW card inserted, the battery drains faster. That's commonly known.
The solution for it is to remove the GW card while you're not playing and to avoid putting sleep mode while playing a game (if you're running it from the GW card instead of CIA)

It does discharge faster when using GW red cart, but for me if I play for about 2 hours every day on N3DS XL it lasts three days for me (full brightness, wireless off). When both led starts flashing red I can play another 10 minutes or so (but I save and switch it off before it goes off anyway). Then a full charge takes roughly the same time... might be 4 hours or so for me (completely switched off).

Oh okay I did not know that, and is the battery the same when just having it on playing a game compared to playing one on sysnand or will the gateway still be more power hungry?

I believe the problem comes from the hardware (red card) rather than the use of emunand. When you play CIAs in emunand for example (doesn't require red card inserted), the battery consumption remains normal.

Oh okay I understand now, :) it does make sense actually. Thank you for the details. Maybe I should consider buying another spare battery, now I need to find a way to change them with out loosing the time and date on the 3ds, lol

Just get a powerbank (portable battery charger that has USB port) and a 3DS to USB cable for charging. Good for long trips...

That could work too, I've seen some good ones that charge via sunlight as well for like 25$ on ebay but if someone has some they would like to recommend it would be great.

The reason why I said that because you can find a good high capacity powerbank for same or less than getting a 3DS battery. Not sure if solar powered would be practical but you can easily find a 10,000mAH powerbank that can last hours of use.
