What do you mean by blank game cards?

Apart from just buying one of those cheap ass 3-4$ cards which do their job just fine, I don't know if something like that is possible.
From where would you load them if not from the flashcard on an NDS ? It doesn't have SD cards like the DSi/3DS

I meant either DS OR DSi. Then can you load backups from the SD slot? (On DSI)

It's a tool to downgrade your DSi (or just parts of it) to reenable DSi exploits like Sudokuhax.
There is not many DSi homebrew though :/

There is no way to run a .nds file without some type of slot1 card like an r4i, to run from the sd card would require an emulator and it just wouldnt be logical to try and build a DS emulator on a ds, and there is no ds emulator for 3ds homebrew, even though the systems can run it natively, they can't run them from the SD only from the cartridge slot. As for the gamecard thing, just no, there are no blank ds cartridges for sale to the general public, you would have to wipe an existing cartridge and reprogram it yourself since there's no tool to just inject a rom into a cartridge like that.

Just grab a cheap r4i gold 3ds from nds-card it works on all ds, and 3ds systems and can run any ds roms or homebrew for about 15 dollars (U.S)

There might be some fake DS cartridges (there are at last fake gba cartridges) but other than that there is no option to "burn" DS games onto DS cartridges.
You can't use the DSi's SD to run DS roms (although the emulation stuff that Mr. Elementle said is bullshit). There was a thing called WifiMe for DS/DS Lite (not DSi) back in the old days but it was very limited.

Is there a website for WifiMe?

How is it bullshit? the only way to run ds roms from an sd card would be to use an emulator and a homebrew launcher on 3ds, and there are no ds emulators for tubehax

So last year someone did this with the 3DS. It's called TWLoader and it's basically a DS flashcard for 3DS. It does just what the OP wants; it loads DS ROMs without a flashcard. It requires Arm9LoaderHax but it's worth it.

Hey everyone! I found my DSI the other day and I thought to myself that there has got to be a way to hack/mod the thing so I could pop in an SD card with all the Roms I could fit into it and play them from the SD card.

So... I've been looking into it and have found a lot of sites that seem to be selling something and others that explain how to do it... But it looks incredibly complicated and looks like I'll need to solder some stuff too...

I'm down to do go that in depth but... Is there a site or a video out there explaining everything I need to do exactly and in layman terms?

Is it even really possible to play downloaded Roms from the SD card?

I'd love any kind of help. Thanks.

Right, so on the old DS (Phat/Lite) it would be impossible to run an NDS ROM without a flashcart. The system only has 4MB of RAM and no expandable memory. Now if you had a blank cart, you could theoretically write a ROM to that. IIRC, the carts were made to cater to the ROM's size, so you would need a blank 64MB cart for a 64MB game. I could be wrong on that detail, since this is coming from memory and google is giving me a ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ when I look it up.
The DSi can't read DS games off the SD card for a number of reasons, but basically all the same reasons it doesn't work for the 3DS, coupled with the DSi's very limited hacking community. Still to give one reason, it's because DS games simply weren't made to save the same way DSi/3DS games were made to save as well weren't made to be launched from from the SD card. Basically they need to be launched from the Slot-1 in order to work.

It recently became possible on a homebrew capable dsi.

Here's another nds-bootstrap video, with Super Mario 64 DS, but this time...

Credits:
@Apache Thunder, for his modified hbmenu, and me, for making it run nds-bootstrap.
