Hacking Best firmware version for PSX games?

Dug my PSP out of storage on a desire to play some old playstation rpgs (mostly Saga Frontier 2, don't judge me) and I can't seem to get most of the games I have on my memory stick to load! These all worked before, but I realized that back when the fan translation of FF Type-O came out I upgraded from...5 something to 6.39 ME-9.6, to try and get it running.

And now I am reading that most of the popsloaders don't work on this? I have to choose between 6.X stuff or old 3.X stuff, but nothing in between...a lot of the older RPGs tended to run on 5.00, I think?

Anyway, looking into I guess downgrading to a version where popsloader is a bit less picky. I've got a psp-slim 2000 (the nice silver one) so I can use pretty much any firmware, I believe.

Just have to remember how to do all this...

I have no trouble at all with this game on 6.60 PRO
6.61/6.60/6.39/6.35/6.20 PRO-C2 (14-02-2015) + Yoti mod
or ME 6.60 2.3

6.60 has probably the most compatible version of POPS. Not necessarily the best performance, though, depending on the game. If you want to go the POPSLoader route, there is a version ported to newer firmwares. Like Randqalan mentioned, you should check out ME and Pro.

I am kind of stumbling in the dark here, I haven't looked at custom firmware in forever.

With a Slim, you can use a permanent patch (unless you have one of the few with one of the newer motherboards). I prefer full ME myself, but Pro also has a permanent patch.

I am pretty sure mine is fully hackable, I've never had problems before. Can I ask why you prefer ME over Pro? Is it just a matter of personal preference or does it do something specific?

ME is more recent and supports everything Pro does and more, save the barely working online ad hoc feature.

So if all I really care about are PSX games, it doesn't really matter which version I use? So whichever is easier to install is going to win. hehe.

They're both easy to install. They should also both be compatible with the newest version of POPSLoader. So if you only plan to use it for PS1 games, it doesn't matter what you go with. At least with ME, you can skip a step as you won't need to run a permanent patch, but that's very minor.

I have latest (L)ME 6.60 2.3 on my PSP slim, and RE2 doesn't work (so I bought the game on Vita), but every other PS1 game that I tryed works...

That's what POPSLoader is for, as there is no perfect version of POPS. 6.60 tends to be the most compatible, but that doesn't mean it's compatible with everything previous versions were. Also, it has performance issues with a lot of games that ran fine on previous versions.

I mostly use the 6.60 and 5.50 pops, but some games require 3.90.

As everybody said, there is no perfect version so POPSLOADER is the way to go. 6.60 seems like the best version and from what i see in TN-X compatibility tests, Vita uses the nearly same 6.60 POPS too.

Also 6.60 POPS having performance issues is news to me. The games i tried works or doesn't work, i didn't see a slow emulated game.

QFT. Rock the latest OFW possible and use POPSLoader for PSX games. Some POPS versions work better than others depending on the game, so it's good to have a wide selection of firmware files to choose from. One-size-fits-all is not a viable option here, I'm afraid.
