Hello guys, I post this thread because I bought some games today (Pokémon Gold, Crystal and Yellow), and well, one of them does not save, and the other one doesn't keep the RTC.

My questions are, is it possible to find replacement batteries, and is it possible to replace them by ourselves?

Yup, just need a security bit to unscrew the cartridge. They use standard CR batteries and I believe there's probably quite a few youtube videos that explain it more in depth

Yeah, I saw some tutorial already, it's easier than I thought.

Just a side note, I don't care about current save files, I will start over in my own instead :)

I know that there are lot sales for the appropriate batteries on eBay, and I would recommend you get those. You can find the right-sized cell battery in stores, however, they do not have the rubber ring around the edge, which is very important. I've had this happen to two carts, but if the edge of the battery makes contact in a certain way, it'll begin to short, and will subsequently destroy the save chip, rendering the game useless. Otherwise, see if you can get some kind of insulator that you can apply to the edges of the battery if you do go with a battery from a store. That way, if the battery slips during installation or during regular wear and tear through use, it won't short the save chip out.

I will look for this! Thanks for the tip :)

Yeah, I lost an English and Japanese copy of Pokemon Crystal to this. Don't have your games suffer the same fate lol.
As long the save file is reset, I don't mind lol. But I wouldn't want my save chip to be destroyed lol

I don't have any solder iron, so my only bet is electric tape lol :P

Should be, yes. Though, your RTC may be a little fucked up after. There's a blog post I found that will help to fix the RTC fuckery: http://furlocks-forest.net/wiki/?page=Pokemon_Ruby/Sapphire_New_Battery_Glitch
Yeah yeah, I know about the glitch. But like I mentionned, I don't care about current save files, since I bought the games today, with a GBA :P

Just start over and I should be all right.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

So I guess those should be what I need right?

Yeah, those should do you well. I might pick myself up a lot and get my games fixed. That or else I really still do need to send my games to @sonicrings as I think he offered this as a service a while back. I just haven't had the time or money to do it as of late.

Well I took it apart the cr2025 batteries should work but your gonna need a small thin flat head screw driver to pry the tabs away from the battery

Electrical tape is fine, but if you guys want to do it right, you should use a soldering iron. You can seriously get a cheap one on eBay for $3.85! Here is a link to a cheap one I found if anyone wants it. All you have to do is melt a little solder on the tabbed batteries you bought (CR 2025 or CR1616 depending on the game) and place the iron on a currently soldered battery connection while lifting the battery up with a finger. You can then do the same for the other end to finish removing the battery. Put your new battery in the same place as the old one afterwards and just melt the solder together. This method is MUCH more reliable than electrical tape, as the connection could come undone if you were to drop the game, resulting in complete save data loss. Also make sure the batteries are not dead on arrival before you install them by using a multimeter.
