Does the new 3ds have higher resolution than the O3ds? If not then why is this considered an upgrade if the image quality will look worse?

The resolution is unchanged but the image quality is better due to improved 3d viewing angle and color. Some say it's IPS but that's unproven.

What if you don't use the 3D? I just wanted to know if it would be worth it to pay upwards of 280$ for a hackable FW N3DS

Some N3DSXL have an IPS display, providing much better colors and viewing angles.
That's it. Some games might have better graphics too, like MH4.

I think the New 3ds is pretty cool and quite frankly the only reason I have an O3ds is because I made the gamestop dig through used consoles to find a FW vulnerable console. I just am not sure if a New 3ds is worth 200$ more based on the slight upgrade, I feel like its a little bit too expensive for what it is. At the same time Ive been pretty angry at nintendo lately since I was an early wii u adopter and they announced they were giving up on it a year ago, I would of picked up a ps vita if it had CFW available on it. Back on topic though, I compared a O3ds to a O3ds XL and the XL seems made way cheaper, same with the new 3ds honestly. Maybe its just me though.

You could also go store hunting and use the serial number guide here on gbatemp to find one w/ 9.0-9.2FW

Would you happen to have a link I will definately think about it but I would have to sell my 3ds with over 50 titles and it seems like a hasle to reinstall all the cias.

Here's a good video showing the IPS vs TN display on the New 3DS XL:

If you get the IPS display, yes the color will be much better and more vibrant compared to the old 3DS and 3DS XL.

Yeah some New 3DS XL models (generally the newer models like the red one made for NA) have an IPS screen which has better contrast, colors, and viewing angles but they have a "scanline" effect and slower response times. And some games might have better textures when playing on a N3DS like MH4U. I heard some normal New 3DS models have an IPS screen but most of them have TN screens.

The screen resolution is the same, however the new 3DS models have much improved CPU and RAM specs, as well as the addition of the C stick and ZL/ZR secondary triggers. This allows for shorter loading times as well as eliminating the need for buying a Circle Pad Pro separately. The new hardware is also capable of rendering higher quality graphics, and there will be future titles that are exclusive to the new 3DS family due to hardware requirements. If you use 3D mode, it also has super-stable 3D which uses face tracking to auto-adjust the 3D image for much better viewing angles. There's also the built-in NFC sensor for Amiibo support (although Nintendo has a separate NFC accessory for old 3DS models).

So, most of the upgrades are under-the-hood or controls-related rather than graphical.

I really want (dont know why) a n3ds but the Japanese edition (not xl) that you can switch the covers =3. But trying to get one under 9.2 at this point will be hard. Since the screen is much smaller then the XL the resolution is still the same, meaning better quality screen (will look nicer_)

The only reason to upgrade is if you want to play Xenoblade, a slightly sharper Monster Hunter 4 or play binding of isaac.

That's sadly it and really I think software for the N3DS will be seriously lacking and I'd be surprised if even 5 more titles do anything with it. It's going to be worse than DSiware for sure. I find the circle pad nub to be fairly useless as it is unreliable and annoying and is prone to not tracking right the more you use it in a single session due to unpreventable oil build-up, even from "dry" hands. I also think the "better 3D" claim is a bit dubious since for me I am getting a double image effect AND if I move my head it freaks out to adjust and that's not exactly a better experience.

I'd only get if homebrew were able to truly take advantage of it, and as of now, they really don't.

That is really true, the unless you are not moving at all the 3d is real messy oh and lets hope that no one else tries to get near your head otherwise the 3d goes to $#!&

Pretty insightful post, I think if they upped the resolution it would definitely make me reconsider buying one. Nintendo really has been disappointing me lately and it just seems like they rob customers by selling inferior consoles at the expense of gamers. Nintendo tries to make a profit out of their consoles while sony and M$ sell their consoles at a loss. Nintendo's money making model is at consumers expense and they should really focus on making money on the games instead of on the game console.

Sony and Microsoft can afford to lose money on consoles because they do a bunch of other stuff. Most of Nintendo's profits come from console sales. IIRC when they broke down their profit margin console sales took up like 40%. But thats a topic for another thread.

Thats not my problem as a consumer, I should be able to enjoy my Mario games on a system just as powerful as the XB1. I was an early adopter for the WII u and nintendo does't even care about all the people that bought wii us early

Or like many people, you might like the built in ability to use the extra controls built into the N3DS for any game that allows the use of the CPP. The c-stick nub is really easy to get used to and for the majority of games that use the second circle pad, the c-stick is mostly just used for camera movement, and for what it is, it's more than enough, certainly better than pulling out that old bulky and unattractive CPP. Exclusive games will be few, but for many, the extra features is more than enough to merit its purchase. For me, I was looking to upgrade from my standard 3DS to an XL when the new model was announced, so the New 3DS XL was exactly what I needed at exactly the right time. I have to say, for anyone considering the upgrade from the standard to the New 3DS XL, it is absolutely worth the investment, I love all the upgrades the new model made.
