Hi

My console is currently on: 6.3.0.12E

I would like to be able to download and play 3DS games, and possibly run some emulators etc.
Which card would be the most cost effective and ideal for me?
Currently looking at Sky3DS and Gateway.

Is it possible to install a custom firmware and run 3ds roms?

I am comfortable with using exploits etc

Thanks!

Gateway or a CFW. Sky3DS is very limited in terms of features and game compatiblity, can't run homebrew (outside of Ninjhax, which requires keeping your firmware low enough and losing the ability to run newest games), and there is little reason to use it if you're on <=9.2.

Use rxTools don't get a flash card its a waste of money at this point.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Also advice before you install anything or upgrade make a Nand backup using gateways launcher. You can run it from your 3DS's internet browser without owning a gateway card.

rx has been abandoned, can't be run on N3DS, has limited region free, and can't run .3ds ROMs.

No, only flashcarts can run ROMs. With rx, you have to convert them to cia and install them to the home menu. I've read that not all games can be converted.

You can download games/app/homebrew/Emulators/GB/GBA/SNES titles in the CIA format if you google 3DS CIA the first link in google is what you're looking for (We cannot name that website here).

No, you must convert them to cia and install them. I've read that not all games can be converted.
Your wrong rxTools is super active and ever dev working on PASTA CFW has been given the project, it's even open source now FYI. And again wrong every title runs in the CIA format as of now.

You said rxTools, not rxPasta. rxTools has been abandoned.

What CFW would you recommend?
As of now, I would say the best ones are ReiNAND (if you have a N3DS) or rxTools (O3DS). Both are still behind GW in terms of game loading-related functionality (outside of DSiware and GBA), though.

rxTools is the project name it was never called rxPasta at any point. Also installing CIA's is not tedious at all since you can click install and close the lid while you go about your business. The gateway red card is nothing more than a glorified DRM dongle.

rxTools was handed over to Pasta. Is the Pasta team going to continue updates under rxTools name or their name?

I haven't seen any word on it, but i'd assume it'll continue under Pasta, which would mean that rxTools is indeed dead.

They even have control of the main thread and moved the github which if you look now is still called rxTools also im not sure what page it was on but when everyone was trying to pick names either Alberto or Motezzar said they were not changing the name.

rxPasta is a common term used to refer to the current project, which is separate from vanilla rxTools. IIRC, its official name is "RxTools -With Pasta-".

You're right. Having to generate your xorpads, convert your 3ds ROMs to cias, transfer your cias to your SD (which is usually done by wireless if you're using a N3DS, making it slower) and wait hours for your games to be installed is not tedious at all

And if you have multiple 3DS, a portable single microSD that can be used on multiple systems beats having to install the games to each system, not to mention it means you don't have to buy a large SD for each 3DS.

I've only seen that they were taking a 2 week vacation. Either way, both threads initial post should state what's going on imo.

Thats correct but rxTools works using MSET which should work fine using the Browser ask any questions you have there AFTER reading the main post.

Installing a 4gb game takes 10 min tops for me and if you don't have a shit pc and leave the back plate unscrewed transferring that CIA to the MSD should take no more than 3 minutes did I mention this is all free?

If you have no money troubles I would get a Gateway. Save the CIA installs for games you know you are going to play a lot, and the Gateway card for ones you want to just try out. Installing each game can take about half an hour, and uninstalling is tricky. Plus, you can have loads more games with a Gateway as you can fill up the 3DS' SD card with CIAs and the Gateway's SD card with roms. CFW means you are limited to one SD card.
Using a Gateway also means you don't have to download anything, if you have low internet allowance - you can dump the rom of a cartridge and put it in the Gateway card to play right away. So you can borrow games off friends or buy from shops and return the next day.
CFW is fine if you don't want to spend the money to get a flashcart. It will be more complicated (for example you will have to downgrade if you don't want to buy a copy of cubic ninja I think).
