Hacking Need Help. No Idea Where to Start Anymore.

For months I have been watching the scene release so many different things and I always told myself I would finally update my 3DS what is now available. It seems I waited too long and I have literally zero idea where to start or what to use, especially with all the different CFWs and all these other tools.

I currently have an original 3DS with 4.5.0-10U and I also have a Gateway. I also plan on buying a N3DS.

With all the scene developments I don't know what to do anymore. With Emunand, CFWs, Playing online.

Any help with this would be hugely appreciated.

Well atleast you have a foundation. With gateway installed, not too many of these topics should be out of reach for you.

EMUNAND:

Gateway's update proof software solution. Basically, it copies the nand of your 3DS, but instead of running it from the 3DS DIRECTLY, It runs it from the SD card. This allows you to use the gateway on the latest firmware. You should find many tutorials online regarding this.

Playing Online:

In wake of the Sky3DS, Nintendo has started banning users who use public header (found in .3ds roms) to ban 3ds consoles from online services for two weeks. This can easily be solved by using CIA's as Nintendo doesn't ban those, or obtaining a private header (the latter is only worth it if you have a Sky3DS)

CFW:

Not well versed on this topic. Hopefully someone else will be able to fill you in.

On the topic of Emunand is Gateway able to go to the most recent system software (Other than the just released 9.9). I've been reading about RxTools and all that, is that just for people without Gateway?

With the playing online. Currently all my games are ran through my Gateway off my micro sd card. If I went the path of CIA's would I still need that or would I just get CIAs for the games I plan to play online with people like Monster Hunter? Would I still be safe being online and all that but with a completely offline game without being banned? I assume I would still need to boot into Gateway to get the emunand and what not. Why is using a private header only worth it if you have Sky3DS?

Sorry for asking so many questions. I'm well versed in most other scenes but 3DS grew so fast I fell behind.

Yeah just don't forget to keep up! The 3DS scene is just starting to ramp up.

Regarding Emunand compatiblity, you have to wait for Gateway to release an update that supports the latest emunand. However, this is usually the day of. RxTools is mostly meant for people who don't have flashcarts of their own. RxTools can do almost everything that gateway can, but a few things are left out. You need not worry about CFW since you have a gateway.

CIA's

If you want to play online. Installing your games as CIA's is the best option. They install to the 3DS's sd card so that you don't need .3ds roms or the gateway card to play them. Yes, you are safe playing offline games online as .3ds and not being banned. Sky3DS (like me!) users are forced to obtain private headers because that flashcart cannot run CIA's

Gateway supports 9.8 emunand on old 3ds, and reportedly 9.9 in Europe and Japan as the home menu was only updated in the USA.

No support above 9.5.0-23 emunand exists on new3ds, however there are patches to allow eshop access and even system transfers from this version.

If I for some reason wanted to go the private header route would I be able to pull the header off of say my Ocarina of Time and use that on all of my games? Or should I take it off a multiplayer game like MK7? Can I use one header across all my games as long as it's private?

To play CIAs, you need to boot into Gateway mode, but after that you don't need the card in the system unless you turn it off. An exception is installing "legit" CIAs which are taken off consoles where the game was preinstalled. They have universal signatures so will play on your console even if it is not in Gateway mode. If you have a euro console, there are 16 titles available, a bit less for US consoles and only 1 for Jap consoles.

/\ this applies if your emuNAND and sysNAND are linked. If they are unlinked you'd have to install legit CIAs onto SysNAND if you wanted to play them without booting into Gateway mode.

You can transform .3ds files into CIA files. It is a bit complicated and I haven't tried it.

If you dump your own cartridges they will have headers I. Them already and you can rename to extension to .3dz and they will immediately work online (played from the gateway card).
