Just to be clear, the save and quit thing was before the omega release, on omega they changed the design of the savegames and you don't need to do it anymore, i think there is some games that you may still need to do it tho, smash bros i think sometimes does not save if you turn off, but that's more because of the design of the game.
definitely not the case
I lost my save once after omega release

no, you had to save and quit before omega(on the first months of the card), now is something else. "Real time" was added after gateway release.

i guess ill have to test out if GW saves without home with all my games seeing how the answer is not clear.
I don't think anything changed on this side from GW 2.x to 3.x. This is what will happen:

-.cia games: No save problems
-.3ds CARD2: No save problems
-.3ds CARD1: Save problem

Card2 games are Pokemon X/Y, Tomodachi Life, Animal Crossing New Leaf. Card1 games are all the others.

"No save problems" means that it keeps the saved savefile also if the 3ds suddendly turns off. Just like a normal legal game cartridge. Save problem is the one i've been talking about in the last 2/3 posts.

well not exactly.
You can always change card1 games to card2 games to prevent the save problem.
I do it all the time now after crashing once and lost my save

I know and I wrote about that in last 2/3 post. ;)

I also have all my games converted to Card2, but for another reason: I have a fault SPI, which means that everytime GW cfw uses it (to store the save), my 3ds crashes. The only solution was to avoid the use of the SPI, converting all my games to Card2!

P.S. Here's my post about this: https://gbatemp.net/threads/128-and-256-mb-games-with-nand-based-save.368001/

Snailface made Card1to2 converter for me ;)

yea i remember when battery is low im in constant fear of my save, i know i shouldn't be playing in low battery but at the time i was benchmarcking battery capability

again, save and quit "problem" was something we had to do on the first days, now you can power off
Go check out this Gateway ChangeLog: http://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/Gateway_3DS#Version_1.0_.282013-08-xx.29

Card1 games Real Time Save feature has never been added! Only Card2 games (Animal Crossing, Pokemon X/Y, Tomodachi Life)

On a related note, I accidentally pulled my 3DS off the table a couple days ago (damn headphone cable!) and it said the game card was ejected (although the card was still in the slot but it seems like it was dislocated just enough for the 3DS not to recognize it anymore).
I lost about 5 hrs worth of progress in Bravely Default and a lot of village upgrades. I've gotten past the point I was at now though.

So even if you keep your 3DS charged up it's not a good idea to leave a game running for a long time without closing it every now and then to make sure the save is written to the SD card. Accidents can happen. I normally never leave games running for a long time, Bravely Default is the only game I've done so with because of the village upgrading which is a pretty essential part of the game (although you can play without it if you really want it will be much harder)

That reminds me of the day someone annoying removed my Gateway Card when I said I completed every challenges in Smash Bros.

The process for Card 1 games works like this:

You press Select to open the menu listing your .3ds games.
You select a game and press A.
The Gateway software checks the Title ID of the rom, looks for a matching save on the system SD card, and copies it to the Red Card's save chip. (If no file is found, I believe it initializes it to all zeroes, but I could be mistaken.)
You play the game, the game saves to the save chip on the card.
When you're done playing the game, you close the software. The Gateway software detects the close software command and uses that hook to copy the save data onto the system SD card, if that save chip has been used. (No file is created if the save chip isn't used, so Card 2 games won't create save files.)

If the card is removed, system suddenly loses power, or system hard-locks before you close the software and you are playing a Card 1 game, you will most likely lose your data. I've had this happen to me a few times already (mostly with 1001 Spikes, that game seems to be a little unstable for me). Once, it didn't lose the save, but I'm not sure what caused that to happen. There may be some mechanism that keeps track of the last game played, and avoids copying the save file if you're loading that same game, but I don't know. I can verify that even on Omega, you MUST close the software to avoid data loss.

As a precaution, the Select button will not bring up the game menu if any software is suspended, even if it's a CIA.

i lost my progress on MH4U few weeks or months ago when the system hanged and had to power off the 3ds by holding on to the power button for more than 10 sec.
Booted back up and i lost about 10 hours worth of gameplay =/ Problem is with MH4U and SSB, it's very troublesome to keep quitting to save the game.
Does anyone have any app that will transfer or backup saves from the SD card itself over to the laptop through wifi? It will be so much easier as well to keep backups!

You can find on that iso website a slightly modified version of microSD management for New3DS as a CIA file also working with Old3DS.

Ive never had this save issue before so ive never quite understood what people were complaining about
