Any idea on what I can do with it? Most preferably without buying any cartridges, (I have Ocarina of Time but no Powersaves or modded save) but if the web browser is usable to load the Ninjhax exploit or something, that'd be awesome. Thanks!

You cant afford $80? Really?

Sell what? 3 3DS games.

Used games often aren't worth all that much, particularly after they're more than a few weeks old...

As for if you want homebrew/piracy, it can be done (with some limitations and a good amount of work put into it). You can also run rxTools and pull legit stuff from the eshop.

What exactly does rxTools allow me to do? Can I install CIA files of homebrew/games and play them?
Also, is it better to update to firmware 8 using Smash Bros.? Will it block anything?

From me bricking my system without a gateway get this. All you will get is RX tools emunand and retail carts. Cfw is usually garbage but you could use pbt or ntr with legit cias. Just get a gateway its well worth it

I said the same thing I can't afford one, then I just got it and I can't see why someone would buy something like sky now since its like 20-30$ more or use emunand with rxtools unless they already bought a lot of eshop content

Yes, as of right now it's the only option. You can backup all your cartridge saves then sell the games if you want to make back some money

edit: since you have a regular 3ds, you don't need ocarina or ninjhax. Just gateway and the internet browser

Okay. It's not my 3DS, it's a friend's, he was just wondering if i can do much with it. I can't afford any cartridges, (although I could use loadcode I suppose. I wonder if that could possibly hack into OoT's save?) but thanks anyways!

I'm pretty sure ninjhax works from 4.5 to 9.2. You could also use the web exploit to downgrade to 4.5 and set up an emunand. The only way to update that emunand, afaik, is with rxtools. But you won't be able to pirate and cubic ninja would still be your only way to run homebrew.

Btw, I just ordered a gw, it was only 60 bucks

Ninjahax works, palentine works (after downgrading to 4.x). If you're careful, and actually know how to read and follow instructions, there's quite a bit you can do. Flushing 80 dollars may be fine for some people, but I can certainly understand not wanting to do so (especially seeing that something as simple as an accidental system update could effectively flush your money). Beyond that, personally, I'd rather not perpetuate an industry whose only purpose is to profit from piracy.

I feel like cfw gets way too much negative feedback juxtaposed to gateway. For free, you get unsigned cias up to 4.5, up to around 7.x with spoofing, and you maintain ability to use retail carts. I've used it for a few months, and have had maybe, 1 crash. palentine's cfw is great if you can't afford the gateway.

I've found that cfw is really unstable. It was a game of chance to get palentine to launch, and then it couldnt be updated. Rxtools will let you update but limits it's usefulNess with piracy checks. GW is simple and works reliably. That's the point of spending the money, convenience. Now if anyone made cfw that did what the gw can do, not just piracy, and work 100% that would be something to brag about.

If you go by GameStop prices sure.
Used 3DS games actually don't drop much in value over time, sometimes the price even goes up (See: USA region OoT3D)

Just by selling OoT3D alone you could get almost enough money to buy a GW. :) (cart alone sells for $40+ on eBay and if you have the box and manual you can get $50+. A GW costs about $55 from www.eachmall.me)
You won't need it to launch GW, all you need for that is the web browser.

Pretty bad example, tbh. A game that's required for an exploit will tend to jump in price. Same thing happened with Cubic ninja, which by the way went from 40 dollars at launch to around 3 dollars shortly before ninjahax was released. Generally speaking, first party titles from Nintendo will tend to hold their value a little better than most other games as well. Try looking at 3rd party titles, and you'll find that's not normally the case.

cfw is a little unstable, I'll agree...exactly how unstable though, heavily depends on your setup, certain types of SD cards work a lot better than others.

gateway is a lot more reliable and you get the choice to run homebrew..or not

it is good to have choices!

Also, you can use it on as many 3ds as you have sd cards for (provided they are all 9.2 or below)

Actually no. It didn't jump in price, it was the same price (or nearly) before. And it's only the USA region OoT3D, apparently that version is rare now. And since he owns it, well, free GW basically :P
Honestly though the prices don't drop as quickly as you make it seem.
