but just to give someone inspiration if they have a "faulty" but working motherboard lying around (say something like ripped card slot pads where someone tried to replace it and messed it up or something, that still boot up, but is otherwise unusable) that they don't mind using as a guinea pig, here is the genral idea

that was done on a nokia n95 to replace the emmc, as you can see they had also removed the old chip....obviously there is a bit more room to play with in the 3DS though

If you make a working first prototype I recommend a kickstarter to show your work and have people or modshops "pre-order" first waves of the board. but then things would turn into a business venture :P
I don't think kickstarter would like a device that you install that could potentially hack your copyrighted Nintendo console. I can't even sell a GameCube with a "drive replacement" on eBay.
 
You would also bear in mind there are at least 5 different configurations just for a NAND mod. There are 2 configurations for the original 3ds, 2 for the original XL (could still use the same design), and the non XL and XL versions of the new 3ds.

That's why I'm only starting with one 3ds (which is a 3ds XL) and see how it goes
 
Water damage. The charging LED will turn on if plugged in, but it will not turn on.
hmmmm, in that case whoever would be wanting to try would have to get the console working before they could do anything with it......best donation someone could hope for would be something that boots up to the homescreen.....cracked LCD's wouldn't matter, completely destroyed card slot etc.....as long as the console turns on and there is a way of knowing it has booted up even just the home menu sound, that would do the job

i remember seeing people who even had consoles that just froze loading up the home-screen, something like that would even do the job
 
At the very least, it could be used as a reference board for taking measurements that you wouldn't have to worry about damaging in the process.

oh yeah i understand that, and its good of you to offer, maybe someone could get it working idk, but i was just saying the best thing we could get hold of would be one that at least boots up to some degree
 
Soo i was thinking this over work and tossing the the idea around in my head with my o3DS (never going to use that thing again?) Anyways I decided to mess with it, so far I've removed the the BGA but stupid epoxy and my impatience ripped a couple of the points straight off the board.

I plugged everything back in and booted it of course it was a blue screen, I then hooked up a SD adapter to it and wrote an image to the microSD card.

But as it would have it, it still bluescreened so I am going to try and figure out what went wrong here, it could be anything really :unsure: But hey it turns on (kinda?) after being pre-heated and soaked to around 200 * C and a hot air station was used to remove the chip (not the best method I know)
 
Hmm still no go :( , I'll have to look more into this later, sadly can't dedicate too much time to it yet.
 
I think the next step for me will be to be to hook the chip back up and see if it'll boot?
 
Yeah, and I also used all 4 DAT lines. Not sure if it matters how many DAT lines are connected, or if it only affects load times.
