Hey all,

Could anyone give me a quick rundown on how all this Sky3DS stuff works? I understand I have to use a private header, but I'm not sure about some stuff.

1. Can I dump my own ROM using another 4.5 3DS and GW's menu? And if I can, how do I get the header from that?

2. Can I use the same private header for multiple ROMs, or should I have different headers for the games I play online?

3. Is the Blue Button card limited to 30 games forever, or just 30 games maximum, and I can format after that?

4. Can I backup/restore individual saves using the DiskWriter tool?

Sorry if questions 3/4 seem obvious, I've checked the Sky3DS site and I can barely understand some of the English they use.

Thank you very much in advance!

1) Don't think so. May be wrong.
2) Same Header .
3) Ehhh can't answer unfortunately.
4) Not sure either...

Hope someone with more knowledge comes along! Best of luck!

1. yes

2. yes but be careful

3. 30 games max that can be rewritten with diskwriter

4. yes

Thank you both for answering.

Omgcat, what do you mean by "be careful?". Should I preferably use different headers if possible, or something else?

Thanks again!

i'd say get a header for each game, i go to gamestop pick a game up used, rip it using my old3ds and then return it within 7 days for a refund, i rotate the gamestops i go to for this.

You should be ashamed. Bad cat. Bad.

So is it okay to use the same header for multiple games? Just want to make sure.

That doesn't sound morally right, but we're pirates anyway :P

So far, there aren't any confirmed bans from people using their own private headers for games. The way it seems to work is the headers are checked for the quantity of users on them at once. If its more than one at once, then you have the potential of being banned. Say you ripped a header from Pokemon AS and put it on your other games. As long as no one is online with that Pokemon AS copy at the same time as one of your patched games are online, you're good.

I'd personally say that omgcat's method is actually more risky. Gamestop resells those games, meaning someone is going to buy them and get online. If his patched game and the person who bought the real copy went online at the same time, he could get banned. Just my take on it.

Thanks for clarifying.

Would I use Gateway ROM Patcher to dump the header bin?

Oh, and one more question (sorry!).

If I edit a save file on my computer (using PkHex for Pokemon), I can just restore the .sav file to the Sky3DS right? I've only read about using Savedatafiler, not if you can do it with the card.

1. You can dump games as long as your device can boot into the Gateway Menu
2. From my experience, one header is not universal.. Some games work, some don't.. "they" (as in the people who are in the know on the interwebz) recommend you have multiple headers, use the one that works with one game, and try a different one with another game if the previous one didn't work..
3. It's actually 31 games, doesn't matter the size, just a 31 game limit on any given card (given that your card can hold the data) I wouldn't get the 128GB microSD's as I barely fill up the 64GB.. PLUS rotating between 31 games (TRUST ME) is a fricken headache.. I would get 4 16GB and make "playlists" if you will
4. Every game that I cared about, I was able to save the game save, and successfully transfer them back using DiskWriter, so yes it does work.

I have both Gateway and Sky3DS for my devices.. I would say:
Sky3DS = (Beginner Level) Greatest compatibility with units, Ease of use / plug and play for 3DS ROM playing
Gateway = (Advanced Level) More options (Homebrew, emulators, themes, etc.), Greater control and customizations, Region Free, etc.

You would need a powersave (don't know if it works with SKY3DS) or savedatafiler

Thanks. My system is on 9.6, so Sky3DS is the only option for me :P

But I thought DiskWriter can just write the .sav file back onto the SD? Is another tool really needed?

Thanks again for answering all my questions.

digitalkid56 can the diskwriter tool write saves too card2 games like Pokemon and Monster Hunter 4?

I'm not sure that I ever tried... I'll test it with MH4 now (a regular save that is)
I haven't used a poversave or modified any gave saves yet, so Im not sure if modified game saves work when loading back with Sky3DS

** while I'm testing, these are the ones that I've tried so far, not sure if any of them are card2 games
