PS1/2 Recommend a chip please

I want to install a chip in my phat ps2. I want the best chip that will offer me the most options for my money. Of course it's to run backups. Hopefully ps and ps2 backups. I will also install freehd afterwards. I would like some recommendations on that as well. If someone could post links here or maybe pm if need be for the files I will need it will be appreciated.

The first step is picking out a great chip. I have installed a mm3 in my ps and it works great but I would like to be able to just run everything from my ps2. I'm setting up a game room and I will not have the room to set up all of my retro consoles so having a ps2 that will play everything is preferable. Thanks in advance guys, Jim.

I think the Modbo 4.0, it is a clone of the matrix infinity one of the best modchips for the PS2.

So which of the 2 is the better of the 2? The only issue I see based on the descriptions is that the psx anti-copy bypass only works on later ps2's. I will have to pull my 2 out to see which version for sure they are to decide which one to mod. I guess if they are too early I will have to look for a newer one because I want to be able to play the full library of both systems.

Good chips are DMS, Matrix Infinity, Crystal. None of which are still in production, there are some old stock being sold now and then.

From what I also understand, the softmod solutions will not play the full psx and ps2 libraries. I have another question. Can my ps3 be hacked enough to play all 3 libraries from a HDD? I don't want to waste my time with my ps1 or ps2 if I can mod my ps3 and do everything with it. I know there is an ode for ps3 that will load about 90% of the ps2 library but what about the ps1 library?

FreeMcBoot will allow you to launch backups easily via SMB (Ethernet), from the HDD or from disc backups, you don't need a modchip for that. As for PSX backups, there's PSX Loader, but it only works on v.9/SCPH 5000x and up, so your Phattie will be no good for that. The alternative is the Sony's POPS emulator or PS2PSXe, but they're far from ideal solutions.

As for the PS3, yes, you can easily play PS1, PS2 and even PSP games from one hard drive, no chip required (unless you're over OFW 3.55) using the respective compatibility layers/emulators - PSOne Classics for PSX games, PS2 Classics for PS2 games and PSP Remasters/PSN Minis for PSP games, all you have to do is convert the ISOs.

I can't seem to find a guide for PS1 games, but the process is probably the same, the tools are just different. You don't need to use an ODDE, but you need a CFW installed on your system. You could technically run it on OFW these days by fiddling with PS3xport, but these guides are meant for CFW'd PS3's.

If you don't want to fiddle with PS3xport every single time nor risk a ban on OFW, I suggest grabbing an E3 Flasher and downgrading your system to 3.55 unless you're unlucky enough to own a console that's not downgradable in which case an ODDE is your only option. You don't need to buy a flasher - look around, some people provide downgrading service. Going the PS3 route isn't ideal for purists as it does entail emulation which is never perfect, but you get the benefits of an all-in-one PS1/2/3/PSP box, wireless controllers and HDMI, so it has its advantages.

Yeah my ps3 is the one from the metal gear solid bundle. In fact I still have that game and the strategy guide brand new sealed complete in the box. I bought it, the ps3, just for final fantasy. Man I miss having disposable income. Hmm, I think that one is still factory sealed too with the strat guide still unwrapped as well. I really need to play that one. It actually sounds like a good idea, to do what I want to do, with the ps3. Any pointers on getting a cfw installed in it? I'm gonna go load it up to check my current ofw after we finish watching survivor. If the cobra can load all of these converted iso's, then this is the best possible solution I think.

I might still pick up a chip for my ps2. From what you said though, I might want to find a different ps2 first. Mine has the network adapter and factory hdd in it too. If I take the time and effort to solder one in though, I want to get the most from it. Oh wait, you were talking about fmcb'ing the ps2. I'm pretty sure I saw a couple posts in the trading forum for people making memory cards for a small fee. I will have to look into it.

Awesome thing. I actually got my Dreamcast booting from a SD reader a little while ago. That was a cool thing to experience. I'm still arguing with myself about whether or not to attempt to hand solder in the eide cable to load from a HDD. The SD is a bit laggy in intros but plays almost flawlessly. I recently chipped my saturn and will probably solder in a bios mod eventually. Chipping the ps1 last week was pretty easy too. I hear the ps2 is alot harder. Anyway, thanks again.

Sounds top, I like having several modded systems myself just because I like the genuine experience. You're lucky to have a modded Saturn, I have to rely on disc swapping at the moment, I didn't have the disposable income to spring for a chip myself, but I surely will eventually just in the interest of keeping the motor healthy.

As far as the PS2 is concerned, I really don't see a reason to chip it - there's practically nothing you can do with a modchip that you can't do with FreeMCBoot these days, you don't even need to pay for a Memory Card, these days you can install it directly to the PS2's HDD and just roll with it. Before spending extra I'd try that option out and fool around with POPS for PS1 support, perhaps it'll work out fine for you without spending a dime.

See I've been looking for tut's on how to do the whole hdd thing. I found a couple hdd image files but it doesn't explain how to copy them to the drive to make it work. I'm gonna look a bit further into it.

Yeah, the whole saturn thing is nice. It was an experience installing that one. If I had paid attention to the ribbon cables the first time it would have been a whole 10 minute process. Instead I had to flip them around like 5 times until I finally realized I could use my meter to see which side actually had the bare conductors, heh. Between the chip and the action replay 4 in 1, it's very nice. that console actually has a nice library too. It's unfortunate that unless you are rich or have a chip, you will most likely never be able to play some of the games. Even rough shape, crappy original copies are fetching a premium on ebay and such. Dropping the first burned backup in it and watching it load flawlessly was a rush. Load times are no worse than a PS1 either. I'm slowly acquiring peripherals for it. I can recommend segastyle.com when you are ready for a chip. Great communication, shipped quick, packed well, and fair priced. They even had the action replay 4in1 in stock too for loading other region games. IIRC, I think he sells the flashed region bios chips too. Took a bit to find an active torrent for the set but it was worth the patience to get it. If I can help with anything for the Saturn, let me know. I appreciate the info for my sony stuff.

You can also use a patched PS2 OSDSYS which will also allow you to launch content directly from the HDD, but I can't link to it as it's on a website that hosts illegal ISO's - Google it, you'll find it very quickly.

Couldn't you use pseudosaturn? It's an action replay mod so there's no chip needed, and it seems to work well (at least, from what I've heard). I intend to try this myself, once I've found a proper model action replay.
