Hacking N3DS XL Firmware by version number

I have just picked a Red N3DS XL from gamestop. The serial is QW1019 and I confirm that it came with 9.0.0-20U

Interestingly, I'm seeing more 1000 series now, when most launch units I saw were 4000 series. Depending on how Nintendo does inventory (ie LIFO), there could be more 9.0s on the way, even of the troublesome Red variety.

The reds seem to be built better, at least the top hinge is much more firm whereas the "black" (more a slate grey) is pretty floppy. I also think it's just a nicer color. Thinking of doing a mobo swap

The hinge on my regular black I'd super tight and doesn't wiggle at all! Very pleased with the build quality.

On my MMXL the hinge is just a little floppy, but nothing I'm not used to from the OG 3DS. I also notice I can move the top screen from left to right about 1-2mm which I find myself doing from time to time between game scenes. I don't like it but it's like a cut on your gum you can't stop tonguing at.

Simply you cannot. N3ds is not supported by gateway

Gateway has announced they will support the N3DS, but don't currently. In the video they posted a while back, they showed the Gateway cart working on an N3DS, it's just a matter of when will they release support.
