This game is confirmed for release in the West. Here's NIS America's website: http://nisamerica.com/games/rodea-the-sky-soldier/. Curiously NIS America shows the platform as Wii / Wii U / 3DS so we might see the original Wii game in the West, too!

EDIT: Too bad it seems there's no multiplayer aspect to the game, so it's just a vanilla single player experience. :/

For an on-rail game they shouldn't charge full price more so like £25/$40.

If that happened it'd be great because thus far only Nintendo has released cheap-ish titles. I'd like 3rd party developers to reflect the depth of a game in the price tag as well. This certainly doesn't look like a very big game despite being in development for close to 6 years. It's more of a Wii title that's just adapted to the Wii U. I wonder what fan reaction will be like. It's almost a given this won't fare well in critical reviews primarily due to the graphics and scaled down gameplay because of the Wii U GamePad (we all know Yuji Naka envisioned this for the Wii with the Wiimote, but had to make major changes to enable use of the Wii U GamePad in the Wii U version). I'm expecting to see 6/10 or maybe 7/10 grades for critical reviews. I believe this game shouldn't have a higher than 62 score on Metacritic. Famitsu may be the most forgiving, I'm expecting to see a 35/40 rating.

The problem with this game is that on-rail shooters don't last for too long so it's in their best interest that they go for budget prices instead so that it attracts more customers. And then there's also that it's a genre (or what have you) that isn't very popular any more so it might get boring after not too long.

I second that opinion. There are only few exceptions to the rail shooter genre, e.g. Sin and Punishment is often cited as one of the best in the genre and the Wii release received a lot of praise. I personally don't understand why because it was such a dull experience to me. I come from playing a lot of arcade games including bullet hell / danmaku and Sin and Punishment just never felt special to me. I'd rather play a boring sidescroller like Gradius. :P

So can we expect to get the full game experience by using a wii remote with the Wii U version? I know that's a stupid thing to ask but there are Wii U games that don't have wii remote support.

IIRC Shinko said that the Wii U version is only playable with the GamePad so if you want to use the Wiimote then you've gotta play the Wii version.

It's like Epic Mickey 2 Wii U's with GamePad and Wii uses the Wiimote.

Edit: Sucks that Epic Mickey 2 on the Wii U doesn't even support the WUPC.

I don't understand that, the dev says that the game was developed with the wii remote as the main controller for the Wii, but leaves that part out of the Wii U version. I can see people buying this for one platform and selling the disc for the platform that they will not be playing it on. Maybe I'd be good to look for a second hand copy of the Wii version.

Obviously I don't have all the details, but from what I've gathered (all sources cited in my first post) Yuji Naka believed he needed to rework the concept of the game after seeing the Wii U announcement. It was troubling to him that the Wii U doesn't come bundled with a Wiimote and instead the Wii U GamePad, so the game "Rodea: The Sky Soldier" will be that reworked concept built for the Wii U GamePad, while the original Wii version "Tenkuu no Kishi Rodea" is the same game already finished and planned to be released in 2011, but was eventually shelved due to management.

So, to answer your question, I don't think you can play the new game (for the Wii U) with a Wiimote. Instead you'd need to play the original Wii game.

A great way to acquire customers is if they'd release a playable demo on the eShop which hasn't got a new demo since.. Since Sonic Boom then again, Wii U hasn't gotten any new games.

P.S.: Epic Mickey 2 is total shit. An extremely mediocre platformer not worth playing.

No gravity shmup sonic 2006 for weebs, 10/10.

On a serious note, looks great, I'd be more excited if it had co-op features.

The lack of a multiplayer mode does seem to be an oversight. It'd be cool to have asymmetric gameplay where you battle it out with each other (flying around and shooting lasers, how cool is that!) and it'd finally be a reason to use the Wii U GamePad in a game.

I take it that with the Wii version the player would play it like a Wii Zapper (as a shooter)? In this regard then the experience is a lot more enjoyable and makes the Wii U a step-down to being limited to the GamePad only.

I was under the impression the original would be played by flicking the Wii remote in your hand, think Skyward Sword when you're flying on a Loftwing.
