How do the 3ds and WII u connect in Smash, is it a direct wirless or use the home network?

Just pick up a N3DS at GameStop but the 3D is all messed up with errors. Might be able to get an exchange in the morning but maybe not and will have to return it. We have a 7 hour road trip so I thinking since the Wii u only uses 34 watts I could plug that into my inverter and the boys could play via Gamepad and old 3ds if it is a direct connection. I do have an old wrt54g in a box somewhere but going down that road just seems a little crazy to me. Lol

It's a local wireless (direct connection) between the 3DS and Wii U.

This. You must have both copies of the game to connect them. Once you have both games, run them and go to the button on each that shows the alternate console. The Wii-U will then send out a signal that the 3DS can find and connect to. From there, you will be able to play with the 3DS as a controller in certain modes (Online modes and a few others aren't playable with the 3DS as a controller).
