Strange you can't get retrogamefans files to work. I just wiped my sd card and installed the files from R4i-SDHC YSMenu folder and renamed the ttmenu.dat file to what my card looks for. In my case it looks for iLL.il instead of a .dat file. My card is a clone of a clone from r4itt.info.

For some reason it refuses to run anything that isn't an R4.dat from r4i-sdhc.com, and even that is refused, because the card is "fake".

Try this? https://gbatemp.net/threads/guide-to-installing-uninstalling-ysmenu-on-the-r4.164359/

I managed to get it running a long time ago.

Here is my old post (the first this is the link above):

I got mine working by following this guide. Try the full tutorial before trying my exception. I found the exception here in the 5th post. If the tutorial does not work on its own try again except step 7 is a little different. Download this. Extract "DLDI No-Patch.exe" and use that on "YSMenu.nds" instead of the DLDI patcher in step 7. Remember to finish the original tutorial after step 7.

Either SD card with "? MENU" when using OUTPUT.DAT as R4.dat, or "ERROR" when using _DS_MENU.DAT.
I have no idea why.

Apparently, you can take out the R4.dat of the working kernel, and use it in combination with a more recent kernel, but the date issues are still there.

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but I wanted to contribute something.
I compared the original R4.dat with the working R4.dat and got this:

With this information it isn't very difficult to get the new update (V1.81), pick up a hex editor, search something nearby (like "00 00 50 E3 05 00 00 0A") and change the values yourself.
Now I've gotten a working 1.81 update, and I don't have to change my system time for this to work.

EDIT: I've uploaded the update: http://mkiddy.leerik.nl/R4i/Patched V1.81.zip
