no, if there is no nand backup from the console at all, i would say the chances of ever getting it into a working state, are slim to none....unless some sort of secret factory mode flashing is found....but idk, doesnt seem likely

idk, but whatever it is, sysnand 8.x-9.x flashed to emunand fine, so idk if there was any real reason for it to be patched....maybe its down to the big delay that usually happens first time you boot up 8.x-9.x....maybe they apply some sort of patch to speed things up after the first boot

So the dg packs uses your backup sysnand to downgrade? Kind of like overwriting certain files on your backup sysnand to get you back to 4.5?

no, to use a downgrade pack the console needs to boot up, if you cant boot it up you cant install anything....the downgrade packs are simply the FW files, and the gateway software can install them

yeah emunand 4.x-7.x seem to be flash-able to sysnand no problem.....idk why 8.x-9.x don't when flashed to sysnand.....but they don't.....i suppose we could update to 9.4 in sysnand, and 9.4 in emunand, then dump them both and decrypt them and see if anything really had been modded (ps only really doable by someone with a hardmod ofc)

but yeah i tried it a good while back and flashing 9.x emunand to sysnand just resulted in a black screen brick....i have no idea why some people said it works for them, both me and hundshamer tested it and it just resulted in a brick....yeah 4.x-7.x emunand to sysnand is fine

same goes for updating sysnand in gateway mode while not having emunand set up 4.x-7.x = fine 8.1-9.x = brick
Do you mean updating sysnand to 8.x-9.x with a rom (using dpad-up method) will cause a brick?

as always side with caution when doing anything via a non-normal route to sysnand....its always best to just update with a retail card unless you are prepared to possibly end up with a brick.....yeah 4.x-7.x seem to work fine, but anything modifying sysnand has the potential to backfire

Wait, so if I restore my NAND backup I'm going to brick? Shit... meh, at least i have classic mode emunand and my eshop purchase history.
if its a backup of sysnand on 9.x it should restore fine....its just restoring a 8.x-9.x emunand that will likely cause issues....a backup of sysnand should be fine

Perhaps someday someone will figure out some crazy soldering that wires into the console's RAM and force-feeds it a small piece of bootcode, bypassing all NAND firmware checks and directly starting launcher.dat... we'd be able to boot ALL consoles, bricked and 9.4 and beyond, and then perform a force install of GW's downgrade packs from their launcher. If that ever happens, there won't be a console that isn't recoverable or hackable as long as its hardware is ok.

i'm pretty sure the patches are at run time, and not actually applied to the files themselves
Huh? My bad then.. But still, I wouldn't risk doing that if I am not sure it is or not... Considering 1 small mistake will brick the console..

if you have the nand backup... hmm there wasn't an command that you made when starting the 3DS to make it go to the confic]gurations screen/ look for updates? maybe if youupdate it you can revive? or just try the nand mod as I told before :/

Go read my post in another thread where I said not to restore emunand image to sysnand. Then you get this. Why don't people read...

It's been said by a million different people a million different times. Still, you can't save people from themselves, no matter how hard you try. I'm glad we just have the couple threads of people bricking/updating sysNAND, though. I expected a flood of them after Gateway released 5.x - 9.2 support.

I tought the things were patched on the fly when the launcher.dat was loaded...Like a ram patch or something...And the nand was just 1:1..I even can remember reading it somewhere...but well i've got a 4.5 SysNand backup here...Just need this hardware mod....

You're right, Emunand is a 1:1 copy of Sysnand with modifications done in memory. Flashing an Emunand backup renamed to nand.bin to your Sysnand should not result in a brick.

try it then ;)...make sure your updated to 8.x+, 1 or 2 people said it worked.....but most people just get a brick......personally i would just tell people to steer the hell away from it unless they have a nand mod

Lol I love my 3DS too much for me to try this without a hardware mod.

yeah i tested it, hundshamer tested it, it does brick....this was a good while back when 8.1 emunand was first added iirc....and lots of people have fell into the same pit as it also applies to updating your sysnand in gateway mode to 8.x+

im not saying i know why it does....it just does, some people said otherwise, but i know i tested it myself and it bricked so thats the only thing i will go off

It's weird though because if the modifications are done in memory, the sysnand files should be completely intact which shouldn't result in a brick. I guess something changed in 8.x+ like you said.

OP's console is back to life! :)

Doing the mod...

Testing reading twice to compare MD5 then writing it back to the console

All good!
