I see that a new Mario, Luigi, and maybe others (Those are only 2 I remember) are getting a 2nd amiibo when Mario Party 10 comes out. I'm still not 100% knowledgeable on amiibos and i havnt bought one yet but why would would they come out with 2 different ones? Wouldn't the first one also be able to be used for MP 10?

I totally agree. As soon as I saw this I instantly thought "Well that's going to piss off everyone who wants to collect all amiibo's."

But just a few days prior to the announcement I was actually wondering why the amiibo's had the smash logo on their base and thought "this won't make sense when non smash amiibo's are finally announced". Now I have my answer I guess.

Whether you'll buy Mario from the Smash Bros. or Super Mario wave of amiibo doesn't matter as the only difference between the two is the design. Games will still recognize the amiibo as Mario—nothing more, nothing less. The reason is likely that Nintendo wants you to buy multiples of the same character to use with different games, as currently any particular amiibo can be tied to only one game at a time.

So e.g. if you use the Mario amiibo (any version) in Smash Bros. as a Figure Player and train it, you can't use the same Mario amiibo in Mario Party 10 when it comes out unless you first remove all data on the Mario amiibo. That way you lose the properties you trained it for in Smash Bros. Obviously you can still use the same Mario amiibo with games that unlock basic content (e.g. Mii racing suits in Mario Kart 8 or treasure in Hyrule Warriors). However for games that save data back to the amiibo, you can only use any particular amiibo with one such game at a time.

Other than providing variety, think of it as making an easier distinction which amiibo you're going to use for any particular game. If you have Mario from the Smash Bros. wave of amiibo and use it with Smash Bros., then you're not mixing it up with Mario from the Super Mario wave of amiibo if you use that for Mario Party 10. At least, that's how Nintendo would like you to think of amiibo so you end up buying multiples of the same character. (It's good business, but sucks from a consumer's point of view.)

This is what I've come up with so far. We'll have to see when Mario Party 10 comes out whether what I said is true. (As of yet I don't think it has been confirmed the game saves data back to the amiibo, but it's looking very likely.) EDIT: It's confirmed Mario Party 10 will read/write to compatible amiibo. http://www.nintendo.com/amiibo/compatibility/

They're collectables, so they figure they'll have them come out for different series. Much like normal statuettes, there may already be a Mario for one series of games, but they want to get another one out there with a different pose or costume because it's fun. They'll have the same functionality, so that isn't a problem.

There have been official Nintendo and licensed Mario figures since the dawn of time and there must be at least a hundred different ones to choose from. Talking specifically about amiibo though, they're not only collectables much like Skylanders and Disney Infinity figures are not only collectables. There's a reason Nintendo is making multiple designs of the same characters that's beyond "they're collectables". Obviously Nintendo wants to make money since they are a company, but they're coming out with the Super Mario wave of amiibo to distract from the fact amiibo are extremely limited.

Wait... so an amiibo can only be used for 1 game at a time (besides the basic unlocking of items)? Oh that's pretty dumb. So I guess people can look forward to spending more money on multiple amiibo's of the same character then.

They're essentially overpriced memory cards that only hold one save, and those who get suckered to buying this are resellers, Nintendo fans who like figures, parents or even collectors but considering its quality, it's probably not that many that are going for it.

Scalpers are trying to guess which Amiibos are going to be rare so they can make a huge profit off of them.

I actually think it's a great idea. I hate the Mario and Luigi amiibo from the Smash Bros. collection, so I'm looking forward to purchasing them from the the Super Mario collection. A little choice doesn't hurt anybody. I definitely don't think it's worth purchasing both (I'm picking up a Toon Link instead of Link) since I'm not collecting them. I find amiibos to be a ton of fun in Smash Bros. and with more support on the way, I'm looking forward to what Nintendo is going to offer.

Of course, variety is cool. I'm all for it. However I don't support locking out game modes to specific amiibo. That sucks.

Damn...Smuff beat me to it. :\

Yeah...the answer's a simple "because nintendo makes a profit off these things".

Nintendo is making money with amiibo, that's a given. However we can probably all agree the way Nintendo has handled the launch of amiibo, the support for amiibo in games, and the availability and usefulness of amiibo is mediocre at best.

It's not much different than your traditional DLC so it's somewhat okay as those who want the game mode/content will have to purchase a DLC that's a physical figure for it. In the end Mario Party 10 will cost like £40-45 than £29.

If Nintendo developed a Metroid game for Wii U and it required a Samus figure then I'd totally buy it just for that purpose.

Mario Party 10's amiibo Party has 6 different boards, each unlocked with its own specific amiibo.

So that's 6 * $13 = $78 in "DLC" and that's before counting any possible actual DLC. So, Nintendo has gone the way of Capcom?

That's some pretty expensive DLC but the Mario Party Amiibo figures do look nicer than the normal ones, so there's that.

Mario Party 10 should have online play and it doesn't, I think. :-/

Just so you know, it's $78 for 6 game boards, 6 players, 5 smash bros characters, 4 mario kart 8 costumes, 6 daily Amiibo presents in Hyrule warriors, extras in Treasure Tracker, and more to come. For just Mario Party 10, this isn't a good deal, all included, though, it's not bad at all.
PLUS, you don't have to buy them all. I'm just going to get Mario.

Isn't the Amiibo for Captain Toad just for the purpose of unlocking a hide & seek Toad mode? That's pretty boring.
