None of us know. I mean, installing to sysnand may very well work as long as the game isn't intended for higher firmware than what you have. Seems logical.

Things can go wrong from an unstrusted or corrupted .cia file. It's not that you can't do it.
It's just that you shouldn't.

It means you can basically use your firmware on the highest firmware and access shop, download titles.

Its also not blinded to your system so anything you do on emunand is not permanent to the system. a quick format of your SD card fixes (well erases) everything.

First and foremost, without emuNAND you can't update to higher firmwares like 9.4. So when newer games start requiring that, you won't be able to play them. Also, without the latest firmware you're not able to access the Nintendo eShop (or play some games online I think).

Second, emuNAND is a fail-safe. You install the 3DS's firmware on an SD card so that the firmware doesn't run from your actual 3DS. In reality, your 3DS will always have 9.2, but you can normally update your emuNAND as if you were updating your 3DS's real firmware.
So if you mess something up on your emuNAND from a weird installation or something, you only lose the emuNAND. So you delete it, and you start from scratch.
If that makes sense.

Not having it is a BIG deal, and a feature that made us prefer Gateway instead of their competitors.

It future proofs your GW and 3DS. You can remain on a compatible FW on the system's internal storage (referred to as sysNAND) while maintaining an up to date version of the FW on your SD (emuNAND) that you will use while in GW mode.

This way you can access the eShop and play the latest games while keeping your system exploitable (e.g. on 4.X to 9.2).

I'll put it simply. EmuNAND is like... It's kinda' like how people use VirtualBox to run a secondary OS. It's a copy of your current 3DS's OS on the SD card that lets you install games you'd usually get from the eShop and lets you run certain homebrew. It's also updatable to the current version. Meanwhile the actual 3DS's OS is untouched and stays at whatever version it is and will be unaffected by whatever you do. Sort of like a 3DS "sandbox" for experimentation.

the reason i want emunand is because i want to play cia's since the save game problem I heard they have, makes it hard to backup saves and transfer them if need be.
would never risk installing a cia to my system nand.

That's clear at least for me, but how much is emuNAND needed apart from getting the last FW and going online ?
