Basically, I went to upgrade to a larger SD card for my 3DS. I formatted the new one as FAT32 like the old one and moved everything over.

All the games show up just fine and everything works. Well, except the themes. And this is just odd.

I usually use the Basic (Blue) "theme" since I like the coloration better, but I also have a few I purchased. At any rate, I noticed that since switching SD cards, the system would always have NO THEME selected when I turn it on from power-off. I tried selecting the Mario Holiday Theme, that showed up fine, then I shut it off - back on, no theme.

First thing I did was go into system settings, storage, DLC and delete the themes data. I'll redownload them once I figure out what's going on.

That didn't fix it. Next I deleted the folder at
\extdata\00000000\000002cd\00000000

That didn't fix it either. Messing around, I went into "shuffle favorites" and marked basic (blue) and basic (black) as favorites. Same thing... it would start up with no theme.

So, two questions.

1: How can I reset my "favorites"? I want those gone, but if I delete one or both of them the only option I get is B to CANCEL, which doesn't save it and I'm left with those two being "favorites"
2: How to make the system stop starting up with no theme? The SD clearly works, all other data is there and usable, just this weird behavior with themes.

why did you delete the folder in extdata? I'm curious, I have never touched there.
use devmenu to delete the theme dlc\and delete it from the sdcard in the 0004008c folder.

then redownload. i can't see it not working.

You didn't mention it in the thread, but considering which sub-forum this is in, I'm assuming you're using Gateway? I use Gateway myself, and not once have I had this problem. It always starts up in the black theme for me (which is what I set it to). In regards to number 1, I tried turning on my 3DS and testing it out, but I can't seem to find any way to make themes "favorites," so I have no idea how to go about that.

the favorites was added in 9.4 with the theme shuffle feature, basically you can tag upto 10 (iirc) themes for auto shuffling

in regards to the OP's issues, sorry i have no idea....maybe the new card takes longer to initialize so the 3ds just carries on booting and doesn't bother setting the theme or something

As cearp said, always use devmenu to remove anything you have installed with it. If I remember right, even entering the data manager it can/will mess up their system and/or SD card.

No, I'm not using Gateway (late)

This is 9.4 sysnand, my good 3DS that's still under warranty.

I suppose I could try to system transfer it to a Gateway emuNAND and use DevMenu but I was really hoping for a solution that didn't require it.

Hmm, it's weird that such a problem is occurring on sysNAND.

Did you already have the Mario Holiday theme installed when you tested it to see if it saved? You could try downloading a theme you've never had before and see if that works. If there's a "Restore to factory settings" tool you could use (not a System Format one) you could also try that.

I tried googling "3DS themes resetting" and you're not the first person to experience this problem, but I couldn't find a solution for them.

Yeah, I already had all the themes, I literally just copied all the files to a new SD earlier.

I don't want to reset my system... I've got so many games and stuff it would suck to redownload them all. Not to mention my friend code.

hmm i forget the name of the theme folder, but i assumed I could have recognized it. i could recognize the product code, but maybe not the title id..
maybe it is not there... maybe it is!
i'm sure someone will tell you the title id you need though, if it is there.
but yeah, if it is not there... then i would just format the 3ds... let's hope other people can help. sorry for your friend code if so, bur that sounds about it on the list of cons of formatting it.

It's 0004008c\00008200\ (for Japan at least), but since I deleted it in system settings that folder was already gone.

So yeah, it's not that.
