Well not being an ADHD energy drink addicted little child, there's plenty of use and plenty of games the 3DS has to offer.
I own probably around 10 games and there's still at least 20+ i'd be interested in playing, but not actually buying unless I unexpectedly really enjoyed it.
Most Nintendo games never drop in price, and most aren't anywhere near worth the retail price. Even second-hand. Buut I still want to play them.

Worrying about system updates? Not really. There's never much need to update. Except to buy digital games...which isn't an issue for a pirate.
Online play? Complete shit on 3DS anyway. Only game really worth playing online was Smash Bros and Nintendo royally fucked that one up as usual.
Save states? What? How is that a concern.
I do agree homebrew is totally worthless though. But people only get the carts to pirate. Homebrew is the excuse.

I assume you're either a troll, or a very dim child. Really i'm not sure which is worse, so you can decide.

Because not everyone lives in a rich country that maintains it's wealth exploiting others.

What's the fucking point when there are so many freeware/cheap-as-shit tablet games, and Steam do a PC game winter sale where you can buy stuff like Bioshock for about 1 dollar?
The games are cheaper, and you can get great discounts on many of them, but they're different games and in the wrong format (either without physical controls or not very portable). With that said, my Steam and iOS library are both pretty big, console games are usually just more expensive and a pain in the ass to use legally if you also want to pirate (DS excepted).

Why are people so excited about these illegal cards that allow hundreds of games to be played? I mean, you have all the hassle of worrying about system updates, worrying about online play, worrying about save states etc etc

Jesus, I hardly know anyone who has played through 10 games on the 3ds system (and equivalent)

You're not saving that much money, especially if you get four or five games second hand off ebay.

(And please don't mention the boring homebrew stuff)
homebrew is the main appeal . Most people here aren't poor and need to pirate. We buy all of our favorite games and add it to our physical collection. It's for the emulators, for utilities, for the cheating capabilities.

Homebrew and games released in other regions that will never be released in my region.

You say homebrew is boring but I like emulators. You may say that I can play emulators on my phone but I hate touch screen controls. I like the 3DS controls for emulators. I do have a SuperCard DSTwo and the emulators are decent but I would like to play them with the more advanced 3DS hardware rather than the DS hardware which is much slower and cannot emulate as well.

Also, I buy those cheap games from Steam and GOG.

If it weren't for capitalism you'd be playing with rocks.
Yes, yes, now tell me how your wages have been decreasing and it's all Obama's fault for implementing Romneycare.
Dude, we're all getting stolen, and it's not by capitalists because they don't even know what it means. I imagine you don't either.

Well for one thing, I do snag up tons of Steam sale games on my Wishlist. Second, I love supporting indie developers, so I buy many from Steam. Third, There are far more than just 10 good 3DS games, OP. If you had half a brain, nearly 100% of all first-party games are amazing from Nintendo, and there are DEFINITELY some astounding third-party titles out there, like Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, etc... Go explore.

I'm not even going to touch on collectability, that's a whole different thread altogether...

Region locking. That is why. It's not just the tons of Japan-only games, but there's a lot of games that annoyingly either never reach or take forever to reach Europe, despite being released in Japan and America.

sounds like a sales pitch to me :P

anyways threads like this are funny, they are basically "i do this which means everyone else in the world does, and because i like that, everyone else must and you just havent been told about it yet....let me wake you all up....BE ME!"

Jesus - I'm just trying to help people with cheap game alternatives - a lot of the people here will be very interested with obtaining quality games for a few dollars. There is legit stuff out there - just sayin'. After Christmas Day, teh Steam Sale is usuall awesome, with many great titles for a few dollars. If you have a tablet you can get very good versions of some PC games, like The Banner Saga.

Just posting info I learned myself this year, hoping it will be useful to some people. You can do quality gaming on a budget, and legit, these days.

Look, I'm not baiting, I'm trying to raise a reasonable point. I have bought 7 different DS/3DS cards in the last 4 years, for myself and others, but I (roughly) worked out that, of the games actually played more than 10 hours by anyone, I could have got them all from ebay at a similar total price.

Personally, I bought a gateway and a 4.5 3DS for foreign games as the 3DS is region-locked. I could just have bought a japanese 3DS but I thought that if Nintendo locked the 3DS, it's because they don't want foreigners money so I respect their choice and don't give them my money for foreign games. The first foreign game I first wanted cost 60 dollars, gateway was 70 dollars, so it was cheaper to get a gateway.

On 4.5, you don't have any problem to play online, just rename the rom to .3dz and always use the same header. Same for the update, now that we can install .cia files, even you are stuck on emunand, it's not a problem anymore.

You don't have to fear system updates if you filled sysnand with random password for wifis, as sysnand can't connect to internet, problem solved.

You have access to a lot of virtual consoles games, more than the few Nintendo decide to release as people can inject other roms in the vc games.

Sooner or later, it'll give access to GBA games that aren't sale on eshop (ambassador games) and so, you can't have them the legit way even if you agree to pay for them.

You can edit savegames, it's useful for some games (without it, I would never have got the Eon pass on pokemon, as I don't live in a big city, I'm probably the only guy owning pokemon where I live xD).

So, as you can see, there are a lot of reasons. Homebrew can be one, but it's just a side effect. You don't buy a linker just for homebrew, but you might use it though. BlargSnes is already working not so bad for a first version (good framerate, sound).

I still buy original carts for european games, I bought the last pokemon for example. Wouldn't trust a linker for a game I'll play hundred of hours (460h on Pokemon X).

You seem to not be very interested by the 3DS because I'm not a big buyer and during the few years of the 3DS released, I already have more than 30 retail games... Only this year, there were already three big games from Nintendo, Smash Bros, Pokemon RO/SA and Ultimate Nes Remix (and probably some I forgot).

i have used steam for years, personally i like rom hacking and stuff....i find it fun and enjoyable......you know that personal preference thing people have, its all well and good trying to share your opinion but you dont have to come across a jerk about it and dismiss everything as "crap" because its not to your taste

Even if you only are interested in 4 games, you'll still save more money.

That being said, people do play more than 4 titles on the 3DS, even if you don't. Checking my savegame backups folder, I find more than 15 titles that I found worthwhile.

Honestly, I think you're just asshurt about having spent the money on the games and finding out about gateway too late. Also, flashcards are not illegal - distributing copyrighted content without permission is.

I don't see any other explaination, as I see no one over the age of 6 thinking that your taste in a system library as a whole should apply to everyone else.
