it would be fixed by default as the reason we cant run GBA/dsi ware is that entering DS mode breaks the exploit, if the new exploit is not a DS mode extery point exploit then it wont break by running things in DS mode

Not exactly "breaking" the exploit, but more like it can't access DS mode. Well, all we can do is speculate. It's better to just wait for their release and see for ourselves.

all the firmwares are basically the same, japan is not special etc, it's 9.2.0 yeah

Not always. Japanese one got an update other countries didn't get. It was "9.1.0-20J" if I remember right, and then, it got back the normal number with 9.2

From what I remember "9.0.0-20E" had the themes but "9.0.0-20J" didn't had them so they had to push another update.

About the gateway, like most people, I assume then use the same exploit as Sky3DS so it might not have emunand support and they might plan to sell a new card (optionnal) with a switch on it if it's the same exploit.

Anyway, even a Sky3DS-like exploit wouldn't be a bad thing, even with a multirom manager and so "one game per SD, like before", as long as they aren't any hardware limit.

You could always use two-three littles micro-sd card rather than a big one, and switch between them to play games (delete/rewrite a rom is pretty fast).

Not to mention gateway is cheaper than Sky3DS, and that you can reuse it if you then decide to buy a 4.5 3DS.

Interesting. What's the latest Japanese firmware? I'm currently on 8.1.0-19J and don't want to update blindly. From a quick google search it seems it might be 9.2.0-20J which was released on October 30th. Can anyone confirm?

Yeah. Next time, here's an useful link to check the last firmware on Japanese 3DS : http://www.nintendo.co.jp/netinfo/3ds/JPN/ja.html :)

no to update GW fw you just update the launcher on the 3ds SD , but to do a FPGA update of the red GW card ,like we had to do when the multirom feature was added you need to update the card through the ds mode GW menu
but we dont even know if this new 9.x thing will even require an FPGA update yet

So Gateway updates in DS mode? Won't the DSTwo I have here be enough for that?

As Gateway has a reputation of bricking consoles I wont be getting one of them until I know it wont brick and they have stopped that crap.
And it all depends on the price. I'll get the cheapest and I dont care if its a clone or whatever, if it works then I'll get it If they dont like it then go have a cry as I dont care. As Gateway have put in bricking code in their previous firmwares THATS why I dont trust them and I want to buy elsewhere. Its their own fault.
Now, if the gateway works on my console and will hold more than 10 games or lets me change games it might be a winner, it also depends how cheap it is when I go to get one.

it would but i dont think GW would present a solution that would require its customers to get a supercard dstwo to do it
Or they'll simply ask retailers to update their stocks to the latest firmware. Gateway users don't need this update - Gateway users already have 4.5 systems. This update is dedicated specifically to future customers who don't have a 4.5 system, and thus probably don't have a Gateway yet.

you mean change out the blue card in their inventory and pair the red cards with new ds mode cards that run on 9.x?

I was just wondering, because I'm already on 9.x, so if I buy a Gateway I'll need to have it updated in some way. If all it takes to updated Gateway is DS mode then I'd be all set.

Even though it's already been a couple of months and no one reported of any bricks from Gateway's recent releases? .-.;

imitation is the best form of saying "we weren't good enough"

Ironic that Sky3DS managed to function on 4.5+ firmwares and now GateWay suddenly claims they have reached a "milestone"

Look like there is certainly no "honor among thieves" in the DS piracy market. That's for sure.

No, I mean update the red card before shipping. Or exchange their current stock for updated cards.

I would wait until they actually have an update ready - things will be more clear then.

yeah i suppose you could use any 3ds on lower fw or a ds lite or dsi to update the FPGA of the red card
or 3ds on latest FW with a compatible ds mode card

oh yeah that too
would also fit perfectly with their statement advising people not to update yet if they are already on 4.5

It's your loss, then.

The majority of Gateway users never got any problems and some people got bricked when they used a region-free launcher badly modified and which triggered the brick (brick code or not, if the launcher wouldn't have been modified, those who got bricked with this region-free launcher wouldn't got their 3DS bricked).

If you haven't done it yeah, I would advice you to read the whole thread, it's really interesting : https://gbatemp.net/threads/warning-gateway-team-bricks-card-on-purpose.360568/ :)

And if it's too long for you, here's a message that summarize it : https://gbatemp.net/threads/warning-gateway-team-bricks-card-on-purpose.360568/page-26#post-4884583

Yeah, our ex-reviewer Devin got his 3DS bricked while doing nothing shady at all. The original bricking code was flawed, it could become randomly triggered during SPI activity, for instance when using Gateway's own maintenance software. I wrote a whole F.A.Q about it, actually. The majority of users were not affected, but that doesn't mean that the problem didn't exist - those bricks on unmodified launchers were replicable you know.

Man.......you guys are doing way too much speculation in here without even knowing how Gateways new update will work....

I never said the brick code wasn't here, but that it could happen for a lot of reason.

The post I quoted said "brick on purpose" which would mean Gateway try to brick all their customers, which is not the case, or we would all have a bricked 3DS ;)

Of course, there are always a few unlucky people who got bricked without doing anything shaddy, but that's always like that (I even read someone got his 3DS bricked and gateway gave him a replacement or something like that).

Personally, I did all the maintenance check two times with 2.3 (first version I used) and didn't got any brick, though the code brick might have been removed since.

People who don't want to take risk shouldn't use such device at all ;)

But they did brick systems on purpose - specifically, they bricked systems of users who used Gateway clones. On purpose. Along with those people, some genuine users suffered - not on purpose, but they have. Pretty sure that Gateway is not the world's authority in who's systems should get bricked. To be fair, clone manufacturers are equally at fault for not testing their software properly before releasing it into the wild, so the blame is shared.

Damn right. Hoarding the market to themselves, its understandable that you're trying to keep your work a secret and your firmware updates only to be compatible with hardware you built/design. But thorough testing should've been done before releasing a firmwares that can brick your own customer base.

Punishing users of flashcards and clone cards alike by means of anti-competitive measures is a pretty....interesting way to deal with said clones, if not a rather foolish way to deal with it. Were the legit users who got bricked ever compensated or offered any repair? There are better ways and it should have been tested more as the code itself sounds, or sounded, pretty unstable.
