Android Upgrade from s3?

I would get an s4, decent upgrade and you'll find a good decent price seeing as it's not brand new

Yeah S3 to S4 is the obvious step if you liked the S3 and you wont be paying a premium for it either.

Other phones you could upgrade to which wont break the bank these days but are "upgrades" would be phones like the Xperia Z, HTC One etc

S4 barely has anything over the S3 except the "octa-core" that doesn't even work.
Maybe get a LG G3 or HTC One M8.

The octo-core, does work. There is a big step up trust me and a big noticeable difference, especially if you go the same route as me by putting google edition or aosp on it

Only 4 cores can work at once. At best it's gonna save you some battery.

Thats the point of it
It uses the big.little architecture
Uses a high power quad core when when performace is required then switches over on the fly to the low power quad core when the device is idle or is doing low intensive processing

Irrelevant, since he's from Canada and they don't use the International version with the octa-cores.

The US/CA version of the S4 is a big step up from the S3 (compared to the S4->S5 anyways), if you liked your S3 and just want something that will run newer apps well, then you might as well get the S4. If you want to try something different, as mentioned by Duo, the HTC One M8 is nice and if you're ok with Phablets the LG G3 is ok, too.

well since I love the compacitive buttons, remove battery cover and sd card support I guess s4 will be my next upgrade. Chance the price will drop by next summer? (Dont plan to upgrade right away just something to thik about for the future)

wait for the next nexus. not only it _should_ be cheap, it will have all the latest feature for a long time in the mobile world cause its a nexus.

The main problem with the nexus devices tend to be that their battery performance tends to be fairly bad in comparison to many other phones. That being said, the next Nexus phone might be a step up in that regard so waiting like you said might not be a bad idea.

You should consider LG G2 as well, screen/phone size is amazing and the specs are just too good. And since the g3 is here its fairly cheap. I was going to get a g3 but that screen is too big. But if i were you i'd wait for a while to see next nexus phone.
