I've been itching to play some old PS1 and PS2 games, but the newest system I have is a Wii which has trouble emulating them I believe. So I'm in the market to buy a PS2 or PS3 to softmod. I'm not really trying to spend more than $50-$100. I'm accustomed to playing everything on my Wii off an external hard drive. What would you recommend I buy, including accessories to softmod and get he most out of one of these systems?

If you're not willing to spend more than $100, a PS2 is probably the better option here. Modding a PS2 is trivial, especially if you purchase a FreeMcBoot memory card to go with it or arrange for someone to install FMCB on yours for you, the system supports PS1 discs and you can load PS2 without any discs at all over HDD or SMB.

With the PS3 you'll have to look for a downgradable model and downgrade it or look for something on 3.55 firmware out of the gate. It's much more capable, it works in HD, it's a far better investment, but it will be more pricy and I doubt that you'll wrap all the costs up in $100.

Which model should I be looking at for the PS2? And do I need FMCB or just a regular Sony memory card and a game that's Goldeneye or something equivalent? And if I do decide to look into a PS3, which model would be ideal? I've been looking through Craigslist and eBay a bit and may be willing to drop more cash on it all for the PS3 games.

How about using a PC? The vast vast majority of titles are playable.

If you want to go the HDD route, you'll need a Fat PS2, if you're fine with loading over Network (Ethernet) or USB, go for a Slim (one of the models is not compatible, but I forgot which). As for installing FMCB, there's a variety of exploit you could use.

The easiest way is to just send your memory card to someone who already has it installed. ;)

If I'm getting a fat, can I put the games on the PS2's HDD directly? But if I get a slim, I can use a USB flashdrive? Thanks for all the help :)

USB loading is slow and glitchy. You can put games on directly, but it's easier to do it over Ethernet. You'll need a PS2 Fat and an HDD Network adapter.

Slim has an ethernet port, so you won't need an adapter. If you go slim be sure to buy a model before 9004 cause they fixed the exploit for freemcboot. 7004 should be just fine. You might also consider one of the first ps3 models like 60gb and then mod it with a bigger hd, they have ps2 compatibility
